You look at something like the 1962 Chev Impala hardtop and it even has faux hood bows pressed into the steel roof. I absolutely love that on Impalas. Dunno why, just a little subtle detail, easy to miss, but once noticed very obvious. I am also enjoying this thread immensely.

Just thinking out loud...
The older stuff had banded steels 'in period' and so look 'right'.
I wonder if the Transits you see knocking about on Land Rover steels or banded steels are a sort of side-shoot from the VW camper scene, which is an accessible off-shoot from the VW scene, and so has embraced the banded steel scene?
Or are banded steels just dropping out of fashion as Mondeos are at the bottom of the cheap chod trough?
Mercdan's looks super good! ^^^

"If a job's worth doin' it's worth doin 'well" ....still hear my Grandfather saying that ... My Grandpa, after lashing something up with anything he had laying around in the yard, would stand back and shrug "Blind Jack Murphy would like to see it."

The bus is BHW432. It’s a Bristol J from 1935. It was originally fitted with a petrol engine but got the Gardner in 1946. When it ended its passenger days it was bought by a showman and converted into a living van. I think I read somewhere that it had a generator fitted too. …that looks like a lamp and voltmeter by the saloon window and there is a lamp under the bonnet too. The wires sneak through the front window into the saloon. I wonder if they used the engine to drive the generator via some sort of PTO. I have a passing interest in showmans vehicles and fun fair lorries, it's obvious now you point it out! Curtains in the windows, highly polished engine and an electric bulb illuminating it. A last gasp of the old days when showmans engines would be lit up while generating, then later the gen sets (a Gardner) mounted on the backs of lorries. Thanks for digging that up, a really interesting read. I thought it was just a cool, if slightly odd, old picture of a lady and a bus.

Have a picture of Helen Mirren lounging about in her under crackers. It looks like a 5 cylinder Gardner, I think. I presume it is relevant to this thread, as it says "Bristol" under the bonnet. Edit. Not really relevant, it's a single decker.

Ah ok, air assisted makes much more sense. Thanks for the detailed reply, it's going to be a really interesting lorry when it's done.

So are all the air brake gubbins just for pulling a trailer, or are the service brakes air over hydraulic? Or full air? Sorry if I missed it...

Have a look at old pictures of 'proper' working lorries in period and you will see much worse signwriting than that!
I think it looks ace.

Having said all that^ you seem to be fairly organised in both your thinking and physical stuff... do you have most of the parts needed to 'finish' it? To a good enough for now standard?
Sometimes returning to a stalled project after a hiatus reminds you just how much work you have done, a bit of a mojo boost rather than a sunk-cost reminder. Are the axles, brakes etc mostly ok when you get the engine finished?
Get rid of the daft scooter car, mothball your motorcycles?

If you sold the lorry, would you feel heartbroken it's gone, or relieved?
If you had it finished now, like it is in your head, with a tail lift and accommodation and whatnot, what would you actually be doing with it? Are you the type to sit all weekend at an engine rally? Would friends be badgering you to move stuff? Or would it be parked where it is now, just unused but finished.
Hard questions to answer, maybe.
Taking a step back from work/changing jobs is always a good thing if one can afford it. I love my job (I'm lucky) but the hours are ridiculous and we only come this way once. I don't want to be laying on my death bed thinking "I'm pleased I put all that overtime in, I hope the gaffer appreciated it. It's a shame I never got around to doing X."

Fantastic progress. It will be amazing when it's done.
Actually, it was amazing before, it will be even better.

Am I the only person who had a "no way a 306" reaction scrolling down the photos? Nope! Wonder what the story is there?

I have read the first and last page, when I get a minute I'll look in between. Very inspirational, goes to show what can be done with patience and plodding on. Bravo
