Well, here's todays pictures! As you can see, the second door is all set in place (albeit on it's side at the minute) The T+G is all cut to size and trial-fitted in place. I've not actually screwed it in yet as it will make the door too heavy for me to move on my own (although the pilot holes for the screws are all drilled). I plan to put the doors in place as they are, fully supported from underneath. Fit the hinges with the doors supported like this then screw the T+G in and figure out what to do with the bracing! Then I'll remove the supports from underneath and hope and pray that they don't drop.... I also fitted a strengthening 'brace' across the centre of the side door that I'd fitted - this was to hold the side pieces of the door in and provide strength for the T+G in the middle. The plan for tomorrow is to first take (and probably fail lol) a Microsoft exam for work (70-640 if anyone cares! lol) - I've done sod all revision as I've been busy with other stuff.... Any excuse! Then, I'll see about making the bracing ready to attach. I plan to make a single cross piece (similar to the side door), halfway between where the windows will go and the base. Then a diagonal piece that goes from under where the window will go to that, and another piece from that to the base. As per the picture (the hinge side is the far side in my diagram below). Does that look reasonably from those in the know? Or should I just use a single diagonal piece? Stay tuned folks, more tomorrow all being well ;D

Sealing joints is always a double edged sword. It can stop the water getting in there in the first place, but equally if it fails, it can stop water that got in getting back out. Not 100% sure about the pro's vs con's. I will ask a chap at work tomorrow what his thoughts are. Lewis I am no expert, but my 68 year old man is, and he's still grafting. surprisingly, a lot of his work is garden gates, large proper gates, internal and external oak doors, all stuff that is such a high materials costs, that the companies end up being too dear, but he has such low overheads he can get it done for a sensible price. from years of helping, holding and passing tools, I agree with lewis, better to leave it unsealed so the wet that WILL get in has somewhere to go. You've done that recess for the vertical boards perfectly IMO, sometimes people get too clever and introduce water traps, it'll just drain out of that. you need to consider the same for the glass, it' doesnt need to be hermetically sealed, so a stitch of your sealant around the glass bead will leave gaps to let it drain. its the hanging weight that kills stuff of this size, so if they sit nicely on a 'wedge' when closed to take sooe of the weight(like upvc openers have that plastic insert that kind of guides the opener into the frame) and have a substanstial flip down leg or something to take some weight when open, a good soaking in a decent preservative and I can't see why these wont last for decades. That's exactly the kind of information I was hoping for - massive thanks Pablo - especially the bit about taking up the weight when the doors are at rest. It's something I'd half thought about in the past but never really added it into the design process. I will now! No pics from today as yet (as I've been working hard....), but the second door outer is all clamped up with the glue drying. Got the T+G to cut and then a little 'mod' to make to the side door next. Had a call from the place I'd ordered the hinges from, they will be here on Friday, so I hope to have them hung by the weekend! Fingers crossed.. Right, time for pizza then back to work for me! Pics and further progress later

I'm using good old PVA glue - I was thinking of sealing any exposed gaps/water traps with some frame sealant - is that a good idea or not?

I also hope the hinges are strong! lol Apparently, it's advisable to use hinges that are approximately 1/3 the width of the door - the ones I'm using are 100mm shy of half the width (900mm), so fingers crossed I'll be ok. These be the style of them: Glad to hear that, cheers Lewis - as with the rest of the project, it's my first time doing it!

Indeed it will be both diagonal and substantial - all suggestions of exactly how to do this would be greatly appreciated - I'm still not 100%, although I have been looking at www.joinery3.co.uk (who kindly show you how they make their doors!) for ideas! My doors are beefier than theirs though

Day 2 in the garage building house... First of all, I realised I'd not shown a pic of the side door that I hung a while ago.... So here that is! Day 2 started well, just as day 1 had ended. I worked out where the mid beam would go, cut it to length, cut/routed the tenon, drilled the mortise on the uprights and test fitted it thusly: Perfect fit, grand! I then measured and cut the T+G boards (15 of 'em) to fill the lower section of the door, they look like this: I then removed the mid and lower beams and routed out a recess in each for the boards to fit in - so they will fit flush with the front of the door. When I put it back together, I figured there wasn't much else to do to it so I glued them and set them in position. However, not having a sash clamp with just over a 2 metre capacity, I used my two 48" clamps on opposing sides which did the job! Would have been nice to have another 2 clamps so I could clamp the top and bottom together, but I don't, so meh! Then it started chucking it down, so I moved operations inside the garage. At this point, I'd like to say how happy I am to have both the W126, a chevy pickup, some substantial tools, and *STILL* have space to carry on making the doors. lol Christ these things are heavy, it'll be a 2-man job to shift them when the T+G and bracing is attached... At the end of the day, I managed to get the other 5 pieces for the other door cut, the mortises drilled out ready to be chiselled and the tenons marked up ready to be chopped tomorrow. One door 'outer frame' set and glue drying, and one in 'kit form'! Hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow, I'll have 2 doors semi-completed! I hope the (possibly slight overkill) 900mm hinges that I ordered yesterday will be here soon...!! That's all for now folks! EDIT: I'm still learning all of this as I go - so if anyone spots me doing anything badly wrong, or if there's a far easier way of doing it, please let me know!!

I've got a pair of surplus 215/55 R16 tyres here. They are the ever popular 'Fate-O' brand of rubber and have about 5mm tread across the tyre.
£15 each or £25 the pair
Cheers, Martin

Thanks for the words peeps - it does suck, but it's only stuff and it'll get replaced eventually. But on the bright side, this week sees the doors being made - figured I'd start the day by cutting the side pieces (the 'frame' if you like!) and attached them to the walls. Bit of backfilling to do, but that's no problem. Then I measured (about 3 or 4 times lol) and worked out sizes for the main doors. The plan is to have the frame round the edge (obviously) made from 6x2 PSE joined with mortise and tenon joints, a further piece of 6x2 again with a mortise and tenon joint across about 2/3 up. Then above that will be some windows and beneath it will be T+G as per the side door (which is now hung but I have no pics..... So todays efforts resulted in this: OOh look, a tenon! Incidentally, after cutting the first one with a tenon saw, I found it a WHOLE lot easier using a router (once I'd engaged my brain and remembered I had a router). The mortise was made by drilling a series of holes, then getting it all square with a hammer and chisel (and sometimes just a chisel to remove thinner shavings of wood). Oooh look, an outer frame! On a completely different note, I spent last Thursday 'modifying' me kneesliders at Donington Park (basically, a gratuitous pic of me lol )

Last time I was there, Albert Looms (in Spondon, Derbys) had a complete W124 E class in (I had a reardoor check strap ), might be worth a look if you're passing?

Seeing as both of mine were pinched from my garage (the one I'd removed and the replacement one I'd just bought to put in...), I find myself yet again in need of a rad with no holes and in good nick for my 1989 420SEL. I believe all the V8s had the same rad (with the transmission cooler at the bottom).
Anyone got one for a reasonable price?
Cheers, Martin

Awesome Guz - you have a PM (or you will in a minute!)
Cheers for the offer Tonka, I've got a mate who lives up that way (well Worksop, but he often visits Sheffield). I'll ask if he's willing to grab 'em for me if that's ok with you?
Cheers, Martin

This is great work Grizz - I look forward to doing something similar after the garage is done (and the garden tidied a bit....!). I've still got 1200 bricks kicking around from when I demolished my original garage and you (and Lewis!) have inspired me to do something similar.

I've definitely got the vent, and if the speakers in the back of my 1989 Range Rover are 6", then I've got a pair of Kenwoods in the one I'm breaking...
I'll check and let you know later!

After my garage got burgled, and my 8 wheels (4 17" AMG Reps, 1 15" 15 hole spare, 2 8 hole wheels that were off the car whilst I was working on it and another 6 spoke one off an SLK) have been rehomed without my permission, I find myself in need of a pair of scraggy old Merc wheels, so I can set the car back down on the ground and work on the other side.
I guess if someone had some I could borrow for a short while (whilst I set the car down, swap my wheels over to the 'grounded' side whilst I jack the other side up to work on, then that'd do?
The closer to free the better, don't care about offset, tyre condition (so long as they hold air), steel or alloy or whatever!
Cheers, Martin

Cheers folks
I suppose if nothing else, it's given me the incentive to take a week off work (very soon!) and get my doors all made - hell, it's what credit cards were made for!
And checking my insurance documents, it seems as though I do have cover (albeit limited) for stuff that's out in the open so I've not lost everything.... Still a pain in the backside though.
Soon as they are done, then it's time to think about covert security - I hear those 'blank shotgun cartridge' alarms are quite good for scaring the curse word out of thieves and waking people up....!

Well, given that hardworking, law-abiding people don't seem to be allowed to have nice things, I guess it was inevitable that sooner or later some thieving little traveller mothercracking scrotes were going to come and have a rummage round the garage and help themselves to whatever they wanted.
B@stards.
They've nicked both of my pushbikes (Kona MTB and decent Carrera road bike), 8 alloy wheels including my 4 17" AMG reps that I bought recently for the W126, the 2 wheels that are currently off the car whilst I weld it up and the spare, so when I finish welding it I can't even put it back on the ground. They had the pile of scrap batteries that I was going to take to the scrap man today (!) and the one good battery I had too. They also had the expensive Pioneer head unit that was in the Merc.
They tried to nick my daughters quad, but that was double locked in the bed of the pickup, so they didn't get that.
Thankfully they didn't seem to touch any of my tools - all of which are now relocated to more secure locations. Along with the kids' bikes they don't seem to have had anything else that I can see so far. They did try to move the big steel cabinet, but got it about 3 inches and gave up - 200Kg of steel cupboard FTW!
Guess I'll be having to take a week off work to make some doors now. Ar5e biscuits. If only we were allowed to hunt 'em down and chop their hands off a-la the Arabs, wouldn't effing steal again, would they.....
