Long time no post in here. Glad you chaps enjoy reading this stuff, thanks. I had to do a job with a very small movement that is mounted in a man's ring recently, which probably dates from early 19th century. The work mostly involved the ring/case, the movement fortunately being fine after a strip down and clean - except for one thing. It is a key wound movement, the winding square being through the front of the dial. The hands are also set with a key from the front and it needed a really small key. The smallest ones commercially availably have a 0.95mm square and this movement needed one about 0.6 across. No option but to make one then. A donor key was found for its 'handle' and the key part removed from it. Also here is the blank turned for the new one. A 0.65mm hole was drilled in the end of the blank. Then I started to form the punch that was needed to make it into a square. The punch has a pilot that fits into the hole and a larger diameter turned to the correct diameter to make the square from (ie diameter = across corners size). This is made parallel for only a short length and then tapers back slightly. The punch is basically there just to take the corners out. Then file the square on to the punch, top side is filed here whereas the part of the punch facing the camera is yet to be done. Two bits of tooling on the lathe help with filing squares. One is a detent that locates in holes in the brass headstock disc so that the lathe can be held in position and then indexed 90 degrees at a time. The other is the roller rest which the file rests (and rolls!) on to keep it flat to the work, though care is still needed. Doesn't take too long to make a square this size. Here's the finished punch. It's made from the same type of steel as the key blank but whereas I annealed the blank to soften it, the punch was hardened and tempered. I used my staking tool to help with punching this as it keeps everything upright. I get pretty nervous about this and go only a tiny bit at a time as the punch readily sticks in the hole it is forming and if it broke off inside that would mean starting all over again. Eventually, done! A square hole deep enough to easily take the watch's winding square. Then it was just a matter of turning the outside down so it looked about right and putting a thread on the end to fit into the handle. Assembled, polished, finished.

The lowering blocks? The ones on there are 1 1/2" though I'll be making some that are at least an inch taller than that when I get to it. The springs on a Superminx might be wider than these (these are only 1 3/4" wide) so you might be able to use some designed for Ford applications where the springs are 2" (as I did on my Hillman)

Another not particularly thrilling update. I've wanted to get the plumbing under the middle of the car done before liberally dosing the whole area with Dinitrol or similar so have been getting P clips, cables and pipe sorted. Under the drivers side looks like this now. The fuel pipe runs on the passenger side and I've gone up a size to 8mm/5/16" and am routing it differently from standard to avoid exhaust heat further forward. Comes down from the boot floor as originally done. But then I've got it looping over the chassis member so I'll be able to run it up the suspension side of the inner wing rather than alongside the exhaust manifold... The pipes and cable with all come off now and the screw left in the holes so that once it is all doused in gloop it should take me no time to fit it all back on for good. The rear lever arm shocks and anti roll bar have all come off to help with access and since I am going to make some tubular air shocks fit I doubt any of it will go back on. I pulled the long U bolts I had made for the Sun-tor out of the shed this morning and checked them for size on the car and they will allow me to make some taller lowering blocks which is good - I always wanted it a bit lower at the back. A couple of weeks ago I attacked a pair of old Corvette valve covers with the mill so make room for the breathers on PaulW's slingshot. This gave me the impetus to pick up the Oxfords alloy rocker cover from my mum's shed and attack it in a similar way to get rid of the MG logo and make space for something else. Needs finishing off still but that's another thing partly ticked off the list. The passenger side front wing has also had it's studs welded in to allow it to be bolted on but that needs a bit more fettling to finish as well. Just trying to juggle various tasks at the moment to keep making progress!

The only car I've had with one was a Series 3A Rapier. Pretty sure that was 'mag slip' as it had a bit of a life of its own!
dolly, of the post war stuff I've seen drive is normally taken off the distributor shaft via the housing the dizzy slips in to.

Great to see so many photos, cheers 'Bizzle. Always makes me wish I could go every year! Though from the sounds of Al's experience perhaps we should just turn up and hope for the best, with the car park as a not very disappointing consolation prize in the event of tickets not being 'found'

Very interesting Paul. It sounds like there were very few, and perhaps only that one, IRS seven originally but that various replicas could and have been made over the years. I guess this might well be a later amalgamation of cool parts then.

My initial reaction is that I first came across this via Top Trumps, but '92/'93 was probably too late for that. Hmm, I probably still bought the occasional modern car magazine then (eg Performance Car) so maybe it was shown in one of those?
Hmmm, a quick Google shows it to have been in the October '91 issue of Road and Track. And the cover looks vaguely familiar...

Coming on a bit ain't it? If I may enquire, where did the brake hose bulkhead fittings come from.? Cheers Dez, getting closer. Fittings came from this place on Ebay link

Thanks Tigs, varelse. I'm in one of those phases where my mind is continually buzzing with ideas/things to do on it to keep progress going. Just wish I could have a garage at home and work on it more often than the once or occasionally twice a week!

Still trudging along with this, in between life, having a holiday etc. Brake plumbing is now pretty much finished though nothing tightened up as it'll probably all be coming off again for undersealing etc. Here's the four way block under the dash with the bulkhead fittings (lower one is for the clutch pipe which is yet to be done.) Also visible here is the bracket for the throttle pedal which is now welded to the pedal box rather than being bolted in using a couple of bent pieces of steel from the lower pedal box bolts. Master cylinders were put in place to allow forming the feeds to those bulkhead fittings. All quite tight for space but there is just enough room to turn a spanner where needed. There's been more wiring progress too and that is now pretty much all complete as far as the dash/bulkhead is concerned. Engine loom and front lights loom need connectors fitting but that has to wait until I know the steering column is fitted for the last time. Which means the engine bay needs finishing/painting. So next on the list is arranging the front wings to bolt in and making sure absolutely all welding/metalwork is done in that area. When I repaired the edges of the scuttle they ended up low at the front pointed section which has become more apparent now the wings are being fitted. So I sliced along the top edges and lifted the front up a bit. Then welded it all back up in that position. Some filler will still be needed here but not 1/4" of it... With the wing in place I marked evenly spaced positions and drilled through the wing and the top inner wing rail. The some hi-tech equipment was utilised... ... to dimple the holes in the wing. Stainless csk screws then welded in to place in the dimple. I also replaced about a 6" long section of the channel where it had been damaged when removed - this is the second hand wing that is still very good but not perfect. With the screws fully welded and the welds ground back in the channel I am left with a row of studs in the wing. So the finished item will be bolt on with pretty much no visible fixings. At the back corner, where the wing was originally brazed or welded to the scuttle I have made sure to have a little overlap. When the wings are finally fitted there'll be a bead of sealant here to stop water from dripping in to the engine bay side of the inner wing but I have also filed a notch in the outer wing channel, and shaped the metal underneath to allow it do drain underneath down the A pillar.

Fabulous! I love the big roof corner vents/speakers(?) that looks like they've come off a Harrier jump jet.
Oh, and before anyone else gets in there.... 'I'd roll that'

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't Scimitar and MGB both have 1/2"unf wheels studs? MGB is definitely 1/2" UNF. Scimitar might be 7/16"

What this picture need is a massive MDF box arched Datsun Bluebird with lairy paint and a star exhaust following along, the driver revving the engine continuously. The Callum Mk2 Jag looks slightly better in your photo than the pictures in the thread that was floating about. Looks like you had quite a compliment of Ferrari 275s too.
