I wrote this about Nicola Materazzi for the Retro Rides Roundup Email in March last year. Sadly his death was announced today. People you should know : Nicola Materazzi We thought we'd start putting some original content for you to read in this here Roundup. First up a man who has had a hand in creating many legendary vehicles, a name you should know if you don't already. Nicola is an Italian engineer and designer whose handy work can be found in a litany of incredible cars, from the Lancia Stratos Group 4, to the Ferrari F40 and on to the Bugatti EB110. Starting out by building his own go-kart Nicola moved to working at Lancia after university where he initially worked on suspension and chassis calculations. He really found his home working on engines, specifically forced induction. The first major project in this area being the Lancia Stratos Group 5 rally car which he developed the turbo charged engine for. A handful of race cars followed, including the Lancia LC2 Group C car, before he was tapped up by Enzo Ferrari to come and work in the race division there. During the course of this work he was encouraged to move in to road going vehicles for Ferrari. Nicola Materazzi was handed responsibility for the engine that went into the 288 GTO and worked on the Ferrari Testarossa. He was then given the chief engineer status on those most iconic of Ferraris, the GTO Evolution, the 328 Turbo and ultimately the Ferrari F40. Enzo Ferrari wanted to hand control of the road car division to Materazzi, but FIAT had other ideas, the result was Materazzi left Ferrari. Imagine what could have been had he stayed on in that role. Instead, he took roles working for motorcycle manufacturers (Cagiva and Laverda), before working with Bugatti to help the EB110 into production. If that has piqued your interest, have a read of an excellent interview with Mr.Materazzi: www.whichcar.com.au/features/vale-mr-f40-nicola-materazziLinked article in the piece has been updated since sharing.

Thanks to rmad for bringing this to my attention. I guess it is Euro lowrider style, but mixing it up even more with the BBS wheels, although they are gold and engraved! Paint is awesome too. Super!

Hey! This is going up here first before mailing list and then later tomorrow social stuff. Track applications are now open for RR Gathering on the Sunday: Head here, login (or sign up), fill out the form, be awesome: retroridesevents.azurewebsites.net/I'm sure bstardchild will be along at some point with more details on the track action, as obviously it is subtly different this year. Still be point to point though and all that good stuff that means we get a lot of people out on the track, without the danger of being collected by someone a bit too over enthusiastic (like you get on track days) and our lovely spectators get to see lots of cool stuff. So if you've got a standard pre-2000 car you just fancy having a go on track with, or a wild wild beast of a car. We want you. The diversity of the stuff on track is what makes it great.

That green double-decker has definitely been to Glastonbury, but way back when, before it had a fence

I have a strange nostalgia for this type of coach: I'm not sure I ever really went in one, maybe on a school trip once? but something about them is so era specific. Also I tend to associate them with being race car transporters for a certain breed of race car in the late 80's/early 90's. Those that had enough money they could afford something more than a trailer, but not enough that they could get a proper custom race car transporter. So they chopped up a second hand coach.

That is awesome, need to track down the RB powered yellow one. Blue Thunder is going to be competing in our Quick60 event at Mallory Park, and I'm hoping appearing as a guest car at Retro Rides Gathering too. The yellow one would also make a nice addition.

HoTWire just had to delete another 100 or so posts. First post approval possible even temporarily? Had a look through and it isn't possible at the moment... I think I can turn on member approval which will add a bit of work for us, but may just be enough to slow them down to the point where it doesn't make sense to have an account and spam with it.

Temporary "country" block perhaps ? We've IP banned them now, but suspect they will be back.

I did think it was the case to be fair. I’d say I remain extra vigilant but there is little need for the ‘extra’ as they are so blatant with the posts. spammaster9000 as a user name too!

This is a fabulous collection of cars. Still a big fan of a Peerless.
Is that a Fairthorpe Electron we have the back end of in green?

HoTWire, huge attack again late this morning, some 40-posts (I’m sure you’ll see the admin portal!) currently they are all to a theme, any way round that or just ride them out? Have to ride it out I'm afraid. This is too systemic to deal with at a forum level, Proboards may be on the case will check their support forums. Will double check IP addresses though, possibly could be IP banned, but usually they are more sophisticated than that.

The Child is 15 and almost all grown up! Good lord, time flies! Shame as its a lovely art deco type building and its a real waste to see it like that. The building amazing, would make for a great local attraction if done well by the sound of it, with the right decor and approach. Real shame to see it like that, and for so long.

I love that you can still see such cool things just pottering around on holiday. Back when I was more of a fb user stories of 'the child' used to entertain me greatly, I hope you are all doing well. What's the story with this place?

I guess what I’m trying to say is for the car scene to be wholesome, like the war gaming scene, you need to remove both the money and the cool factor, neither of which are ever going to happen. I see what you're saying to a degree about the wider car scene, but for a Retro Rides type equivalent to the Warhammer fan mag it is worth remembering that most if us don't have money and none if us are cool. In fact I suspect unlike most scenes you couldn't just turn up in RR land having splashed a load of cash on the most expensive thing and win. Even if you could though I don't think it would preclude the possibility of doing something like 28mag. It is pretty much annual by the looks of things, so think of it as a yearly report about a given scene. With interviews, a bit of history deep dive, some event reports and opinion pieces, stuff like that. I might give it a go and see.
