My first experience with British scrappys? It was in Mid-Wales around 5 years ago. I was trying to pull an ABS sensor out of a car with no wheels when 11 year old son-of-the-owner came around and offered to flip the car on its side using a mahoosive forklift That scrappy was clearly the old school one. The other one I used to visit often is on the coast of Cardigan Bay and its really big. The whole place has also 2 yards. One seems to have complete wrecks where you can cut off whatever you want and the other one has literally hundreds of cars but they're all marked and you have to note what you took and numbers on the car. None of the cars are stacked and it all looks safe and sound + prices are cheap and negotiable. Just like it all should be. On the other hand my 'new local' scrappy... Last Sunday I was pulling something out of a car that was on top of another. Being quite short I had to climb on top of the engine whilst the 'boss' was swinging a Ford Galaxy on one arm of a forklift around 2 metres away from the Golf I was sitting on I don't remember ever undoing bolts that quickly Nevertheless great scrappy, good prices (if you speak to a right person and don't show too much enthusiasm about the part in question) and there's always something for everyone. Coincidentially it's just by a river I don't think they know what H&S means. They probably think it's some clothes shop for girls EDIT: I think I'm talking about the same yard as Butterz?

here is Fife there are still a few old skool yards, but they have changed from what they were 10 years ago,
went in at the weekend looking for a wheel for a focus, and the guy on the gate said that all alloys are taken off the cars and crushed as they enter the yard!
10 years ago in the same yard, i was sitting inside a capri lazer, 5 cars high, as my dad stood on a wire fence atop a railway embankment [main line london-aberdeen, with trains whizzing past] taking of the alloys for my escort!! i burst my hand open on the broken side window, by the time we were finished, it looked like there had been a murder in the thing!! Now have a nice scar on my hand, ahh the Memories!!!
We also have a You-Pull-It yard here, and its like a tesco car park, the cars are even better parked than a tesco car park, all sorted out into makes and country of origin, eg: all the German stuff is in one bit, organized into VW, Skoda, BMW etc, 4X4's and Commercials at the back etc, its a really well organized place, wheel barrows provided and a fit blonde on a good day behind the desk!!! Prices are also pretty good: Mk4 escort rear lights x2, front and rear Bumpers, 1/2 Exhaust, rear window rubber & a tool box stuffed with bulbs and bolts for £45 which isnt to bad. all the cars are sitting up on old wheels so you can get in about them, concrete base to work on. You need to pay £1 to get into the yard, but its a cheep date as your £9 at the cinema!! Plus you get a High Viz and Hard hat. They also have a Public Bog if nature calls!!
Yards have chanced from what they were, but so have the cars, within the next 10 years how much will you be able to reuse from a scrap car now its all electronics and plastic wings?

My local scrappy has changed a lot. Used to be rows of cars 3 or 4 high which I would climb about on. They never used to accept card it was cash only. Nowadays it's all racked up and your sent to speak to one of the guys in the yard, tell them what you want, they select the vehicle and get the bits. Few years ago you could bring your own tools in or pay a deposit and borrow theirs. Don't know if they let you have a wander so you can see what's about but that's what I would rather do!

Health And Safety ? You've obviously never heard of Harry Pringles then . . The good old indoors which is actually outdoors 'building'. TBF, it used to be a lot worse, but even now it is still your old skool 'pile em 4/5 high' and lean a ladder against the teetering pile affair. The young lad that works there is a bit of a knob mind. He's expensive too.
