... the most amount of space/practicality powered by proven drivetrains you can get for such small money. No big alloys or small windows, as little electronic helpers as you need (I can switch on the wipers myself, thanks) and more money left over (compared to other repmobiles) to run a retro alongside Though they went a bit crazy making them... There are 5 techniques used to put the rear quarter in: spot welding, folding, 2 different sorts of glues and brazing... (and some worker blew a hole in the panel and left about 15cm welding wire under the primer ;D Had the pleasure to replace the panel on one of them) The brazing part is interessting, as it gets increasingly modern again to braze instead of welding.

Actually I would generally spend the money on lots of older cars rather than one new one, but given the unlikely scenario that i had to buy one new one and keep it rather than sell it on i think i'd be after the the 1000bhp TT version of the Bristol Fighter2

I visited Moscow and St. Petersburg this January and was stunned by how many of these Ladas ("Shiguli") still are around, 9 out of 10 looking totally fine (if a tad dirty), not the barely running heaps you'd expect. Which could be because most of them aren't half as old as we think they are. ... and they're keeping all the moredoor-Nivas for themselves. grr oh and to avoid further getting picked on and to aknowledge you have a point here are some modern cars I'd consider desirable: ... self slamming. Hope they're still being made. mmmm... cheers ;D

Are the people saying that all modern cars are curse word just being obtuse. Day in day out i drive all kinds of makes and models of new cars and i could count on one hand the ones that are curse word. Granted there are features, fixtures and fittings etc i don't like, but this is personal opinion and doesn't make them rubbish cars. Based on my own experience of modern stuff, I'll take a Mondeo Mondeo Estate Titanium X Sport 2.2TDCi 200ps Automatic. ;D Oh and FWIW the newest car i have ever owned was a 1989 Astra.

This is an interesting thread, almost a counterpoint to the regular comment of 'modern cars are soulless'. I think we've got something of a design renaissance happening at the moment as car companies strive to create dynamic, interesting cars while staying within the constraints of current safety and fuel efficiency/environmental laws. It's no wonder that quite a few are looking back to their heyday either. The Rover 75 estate is getting a bit elderly now to be considered new, but when they were new I found them desirable. I still do. I wouldn't mind a Nissan Micra so I could customise it (never gonna happen). The Fiat 500 seems to be pretty capable while sticking to some of the tenets of a small car being (by comparison) small unlike the BMW Mini. Love this Frankfurt display. Funnily enough, the cars I'd own are ones that are retrospective in their design in some way, it's what appeals to me, and there's still plenty of them out there. I'm still not sold on the Golf in a fat suit New Beetle though.

I was asked this on another forum. I answered:
Jaguar XJ Jaguar XF Chevrolet Camaro Dodge Challenger Ford Mustang Lexus LS Lexus GS Chrysler 300C SRT8 Dodge Viper Chevrolet Corvette Alfa Romeo Mita Cadillac CTS-V Cadillac Escalade Lincoln Navigator Lincoln Town Car Range Rover Sport HSE Mercedes S600 Lincoln MKS BMW M5 BMW 760i - although it appears I would have to import one from HK as BMW UK only list hybrid and diesel 7 series now.

Not cheating, it is exactly what I was talking about! Old cars that are still being produced are where it's at!
