It's like a puppy. I don't see it too often as it's currently holed up in my mum's garden because, well, quite simply I can't afford to drive it at the moment. But still (and this is where the puppy reference comes in) it fires up first time, every time - even if it's been stood for three weeks. I'm not in a good way right now though. I'm not skint, I'm not broke and I'm not short of cash. I'm downright poor. Fuel has gone up, wages have gone down but my commitments remain the same, including the trek to and from Bristol (from Kent) each weekend to see my daughter. Can you see where this is going? I said I never would, and quite frankly, in my heart of hearts I don't want to, but selling the Z may soon be on the cards. Before anyone chips in with "yeah, shocker, you always sell cars Pollitt" I'd like you to stop for a second. I'm not thinking about doing this for financial gain despite my current fiscal situation, I'm thinking about the car. If I did sell it the money would only go back to my other half who bought it, not in my pocket - and she's not exactly begging for the money so she's not catalyst to sell. I just love it so damn much - it hurts to see it under a sheet getting rustier and rustier. It's survived for 50 years, the last thing I want is to see it perish by my hand. A new owner with budget, space and time could give the old girl the new lease of life that she deserves and that, at the moment at least, I can't envisage myself providing. I can't afford to drive it, maintain it or crucially, store it. If I could get her in a dry lock up and ignore her for 12 months all would be well - but I can't. If I leave the old girl in my mums garden for 12 months however, well, it's not going to produce shiny metal and happy mechanicals even if I try to 'protect it', is it? What do I do? I honestly don't know and frankly, it's killing me. I love that car more than any other and I don't want to sell it, but in terms of the foreseeable future, she'll have to live in condition which, after only a couple of months, are already taking a visible toll on the metal. Advice? Help? Someone just talk me out of it? Mojo is on the floor right now, all I want to do is have a cool old car to ted about in, but it's impossible right now. I'm sorry to sound like a depressed moaner, but frankly that's all I'm capable of being at the moment. Rent, bills, nursery costs, divorce bills and the Bristol-Kent-Bristol thing wipe me out. I'm not trying to rob anything away from anyone - times are hard for us all. I think, more than anything, I just need to put this out there and hopefully get some mojo back. Come on RR, don't make me right, make me see sense. Chris

I'm probably simplifying this massively Chris, but could the A52 crew not store it indoors for you or at least under cover? There would at least be plenty of people there to fire it up regularly if you weren't there.

So its not gonna be wasted if you want to put the z in it for 12 months and i can start it up every week for you Having seen the posts you have put up about the car i can see how much you love it and i would hate to think of you selling it when i have this space spare i don't want any thing as I'm paying the rent anyway for an empty garage

I'm probably simplifying this massively Chris, but could the A52 crew not store it indoors for you or at least under cover? This would be a possible solution except for one thing....space. Or lack of it. Chris, you know I always have a plan for things and would be more than happy to store it indefinitely for you if there weren't so many motors at the unit. Despite having sold th Delica, MR2 and Hustler so far this year, there is still a full unit of cars and space is going to get even tighter very soon because we'll be losing half the space down where the Starion/Fairlane are stored very soon. Obviously if anything changes, I'll be sure to let you know Hope you manage to sort something out very soon....actually....I have an idea, I'll get back to you in a mo'

sell me the fairlane and keep the Z in it's space. You're brave and/or crazy. We removed the doors without tools ;D Hope you get it figured out, Chris. If you sell it, then something will just be plain wrong. I'll put another idea out there (pending space/time requirements at A52 again). A single person could do most of the undersealing and stuff on a car in a weekend, but get a couple people on it, and that wanky bit at the end of the sill could be welded up, it could be undersealed, cavity waxed/pumped with oil, given a proper clean/wax/whatever it is that people like Dan do to make cars shiny and water repellent and generally outdoor proofed. If it's all in good condition, you can keep it that way far more easily than chasing grot about after it's happened.

Loan the Z out to someone? Let them run it for a year, all costs incurred during that time falls to the custodian and take the car back on an agreed date?
Have to be someone you trust obviously but you get the car used regularly, it gets some loving, and they get a cool 60s Ford for 12 months?

Me and John Donttellhimpike had a similar arrangement - he'd bought a Mitsubishi Celeste, had nowhere to keep it so loaned it to me over the summer. I kept it topped up with vital fluids, drove it regularly etc. It worked out nicely for both of us. Chin up Chris. I know how if feels when you're totally skint, and the classic car on the driveway seems like a ridiculously frivolous thing to have. I hope you can weather the storm - the first thing that popped into my head was to sell the 300SEL and drive the Zody as a daily. Go on. It'll be fun!

If you sell the Z your a Nancy, and my GF says she will punch you in the babymaker. This house you speak of, is it really necessary?

Dude, what would your daughter think if daddy sold his car? I know how much it sucks having a car you love but can't use or afford. I can barely afford the rent on the workshop my Avenger is in, and the panels are so frigging rare that they cost and arm, a leg and a gonad on the rare occasion that they turn up on ebay. Every time I find another rust hole, I want to jack it all in and buy something I can just drive and enjoy

pollitt, if it comes down to it - I'LL store it for you!
maybe you could drive it up here, then I could run you back down to bristol just before an A-52 weekender??
if you sell the zed, I will come round to your house while you are asleep, and stamp all over your meat and 2 veg - so there!

Don't sell it, you'll never forgive yourself. The number of people that say "I wish I hadn't sold that car I loved so much" proves it. Looks like there's been some excellent philanthropy offered above, I'd make use of that if you can.

Me and John Donttellhimpike had a similar arrangement - he'd bought a Mitsubishi Celeste, had nowhere to keep it so loaned it to me over the summer. I kept it topped up with vital fluids, drove it regularly etc. It worked out nicely for both of us. Also done this a couple of times, worked nicely. Once it was a guy who I'd never actually met that let me look after his car for a month over Christmas while he went away to find the sun...! lastly - you can store it reasonably well. Put a tarpaulin UNDER the car, make sure it's well undersealed over a dry weekend, and it will keep fairly well. I kept an Estelle like that for 18 months and it was still as clean underneath after as when it was parked up.

I've also got a lock up 45 mins from Bristol which you are more than welcome to use, I'm also very happy to look after it although I can't promise my Mk1 'Tina wont wanna have sex with it. I've been in your situation with ex/kids/contact and had to sell off 5 of my hard earned retro's when things kicked off and social services/court was involved, so I kinda know how you feel. It's taken me 4 years to get back on my feet and start to get back to my love of cars, don't let it happen to you. Keep it!
