Bit of interest in this in my thread about tyres so I thought id start a thread in here on it
Had been looking on and off for one of these for a couple of years, most were either, too shagged/expensive/far away, this one turned up for sale 60 miles away as a bare shell, decided it had to be mine ;D
Was a tarmac rally car in it's day, I intend to build it up as a rally/rallycross car but use it on the road.
Still had the stickers on it from it's last rally (Bastos in Belgum), was placed 7th out of a field of maybe 150 cars so the car and driver must have been pretty fomidable BITD, ran with some kind of Rover V8.
Probably paid too much for it (£1500 delivered), as bought it was as bare as a bare shell can be , came with a siezed hydraulic pedal box, a steering column, front crossmember with the mounts cut off (swiftly binned), and a nackered hacked about steering rack (binned that too), was advertised as a Gartrac G4 but since found out its a conversion built from a kit with Gartrac alloy arches, on the plus side it's mega strong with no rot, front panel was pretty bashed though from punting hay bales out it's way (new one fitted now).
Came with a log book and reg (Q plate) so should be easy to get on the road.
Huge front tunnel
Rear floor with fourlink box's, huge diff tunnel, boxed in boot area.
Plenty of space in engine bay, could get a 5.0 V8 in there ;D
A mate was breaking an RS Turbo so I got the glass, heated front and rear screens, electric window motors, lights, wipers etc, did get a full dash and door cards as I originaly planned the car to be a bit civilised with a stereo and heater etc but plans have changed now ;D,
Bought this Capri Atlas axle, stripped it and took it to a local rally specialist to have the four link brackets and shocker mounts welded on.
The job was ok, not cheap though, but I was'nt happy with the shocker mounts, any group for Atlas i've seen they are turned the other way, also i've never seen a bottom shocker mount using a 13mm bolt , so bought these new ones (with 19mm bolt) and welded them on myself.
You can also see in this pic I had to get the link bars lengthened two inches, I assumed the car was MK2 Escort group 4 spec underneath but i'm finding that most of the bits I buy off the shelf need modified in some way or another, recon the guy that built it originaly must have made his own bits, luckily i've found a local engineering guy who can help out and is very reasonable (i've found some engineering companys reluctant to touch bits of car suspension or steering)
Bought a coilover conversion kit from Rallydesign, built these up with Monroe gas shocks and 2.1/4" springs.
Then the poo hit the fan as I discovered the rear towers were too narrow for the coilovers, had assumed the car ran a five link with coilovers but now recon it ran four bars, slipper springs, panhard rod and normal turreted shocks, a solution would have been to fit bigger round turrets but did'nt fancy cutting that much out of the shell so decided to move the top mounts out.
Box section cut out.
New mount constructed, will use the original hole to bolt on a tower brace (still to finish off/tidy up the welding).
Car originaly ran a panhard rod but i'm fitting a Watts linkage as it looks far nicer, still to weld on the towers for the bars.
Got this 70,000 mile blacktop 2.0 Zetec for nowt ;D, just three hours of my time getting the lump out of the Mondeo in the breakers.
Plan to instal this with a type 9 five speed, Retroford sump, water rail, engine mounts etc, did plan to run it on Webers but may go for Jenveys, it'd be nice if the car would run and drive without fuss when it's done.
Front legs in place with adjustable TCA's, and compression struts, again had to get these lengthened two inches, could have cut and re-welded the bracket on the chassis leg but thought it'd be easier to get the bar lengthened.
Eccentric top mount (Capri), world cup cross member, quick rack, alloy rack mounts, shortened steering shaft.
Tankmount in boot, no space for a spare despite the shaped cut out, will fit tank, pumps and filters in here, not a lot else, battery will maybe go in here but probably on the rear floor inside the car.
Bought this mega dished AVO steeringwheel, have gone through a few dash ideas, gone from a full dash with Autometer guages, to a cut down dash (just the section in front of the wheel) with a motorbike style dash unit inside to a custom metal box housing Autometer guages in the centre of the bulkhead (probably what i'll go for), with the column/pedal box exposed.
This is the car as it stands at the moment, out of the garage for the first time today ;D
Body looks ok in these pics but has plenty of cracked bubling filler where the alloy arches are rivited to the wings (reaction between the alloy and steel), it's all needing dug out and re-done, doing one corner at a time (between mechanical stuff), my body prep os ok, not great so will leave the final finishing to the body/paint shop, will be re-doing it Radiant red, inside and underneath too .
Been at it a year so far, like most of these projects it's a question of time and money.
Hope to have the engine and box in this year, maybe running next year
