Hi guys, so I'm still curing my rasping sound from my 280zx engine and it's been narrowed down to the exhaust manifold gasket where it meets the head, I've replaced the gasket but for some reason it's still leaking and I can visibly see fumes leaking out.
Now unorthodox as it is for a temporary measure would it be possible to seal around the gasket with a silicon of some kind, to stop the leaking?

silicon or hylomar will just burn off, I tried the same on mine last week & it lasted for about 10 minutes. Exhaust paste would be better as it'll cope with the heat, but won't solve the cause. Why won't it seal anyway?

I've found that using paste to stop a leak that close to the engine usually ends up with the paste being blown out fairly quickly.

wouldn't instant gasket work? i've found it to be quite good

Are all the mounting studs intact? L6's often have the front or rearmost stud snapped off. Where exactly is it blowing? You can get high temp silicon that's good for over 1000 degrees but at best it'll only be a short term fix.

Instant gasket wont take the temperatures. Gungun is not rated for use on manifolds they are too hot and neither is liquid metal.
The only thing I can think of is assembly paste. Otherwise take the manifold off thourighly clean the mating face. Go over them with a fine emery cloth and replace with a new gasket. If that doesn't work either the head mating face or exhaust mating face or both will need a fine skim
Make sure you torque the bolts up to the manufacturers torque setting and work as you would with a head so that it goes on true

don't think that will work remember it has to deal with gasses between 1500 and 2000 degrees at the head face. Most of these paste and instant gaskets stuff will last you ten minutes if your lucky

Like Paul says, manifolds are way too hot to just spread on any paste I'm aware of.
A skim over the mating surfaces may be the only way to sort it permanently, certainly give skimming the manifold a try.
Are the gaskets compressible? if they are then you could try putting 2 new gaskets on as a temporary thing, it'll allow a little more padding between the surfaces.
