My housemates MX5's front drivers side caliper is sticking. He's not hugely mechanically minded but knows what end of a spanner does what, however doesn't really fancy attempting a brake refurb himself. What can he do to try and free it off in the short term until we can have a look at it back in bath? Any tips? Can't really afford to have someone look at it because he's spent all his money on coilovers ;D

I've had a sticky caliper, if he isn't able to use the spanners then there's little he'll be able to do. I removed the pads, pressed the pedal to draw the caliper piston out. The piston was a bit gammy so gave it a quick once over with some very fine wet & dry, quick squirt of brake cleaner, pushed it back in. Pressed the pedal and pushed the piston back a few times & it didn't stick again.

Hi, just thought I'd mention that theres a chance it could just be the flexible brake hose collapsing internally rather than a sticking piston. To test if it's this pump the brakes a few times (with the wheel in the air) then open up the bleed nipple a bit and see if the wheel then turns freely, if it does chances are its just the brake hose. I wasted money on a new caliper and other parts on my accord before I checked this! Doh! A new hose was only a couple of quid!
