So this is how I spent most of my Saturday...
Yeah. Boring.
Basically, the damn thing will run happily when it's stood still, but under load it has none of it. Then, if you try and start it again it has none of it some more, more often than not though, it just won't start at all. Leave it for an hour or two, repeat same sequence.
One suspected point of failure is this...
...the fuel metering head. When the break-down man rocked up he removed the air filter and then freed off the main fuel line into the metering head. Turn the ignition, fuel a-aplenty. So fuel was quite happily getting to the metering head. He cracked off an injector feed, turned the ignition and there was only a dribble of fuel. Ergo, fuel isn't getting into the cylinders.
In all honesty, that would seem to be the cause of it. It goes on though...
That's the OVP (over voltage protector) which had blown a fuse. Now these suckers can die without warning, causing (from what I've read) all kinds of agony. They also force the ABS light to be on (as is the case in mine). I went to the local breakers and picked one up from a W124, put it in my car, same problem. So, I don't know if that's to blame or not.
Everything else seems fine, and when it runs it runs well. It'll only run for about 5 minutes though, then it won't go again. It' running again this morning, I know as I got this text from my step-dad (the car is on his drive at the mo):
"CAR A1. ENG WAS AWAY BETWEEN 3-4 TURN @ 8.00 AM"
Although I'm willing to bet it won't run again. I'll ring him in a mo to find out.
I'm pretty sure it must be the metering head, and thankfully Hardcore has one I can purchase and fit. It's a pig of a job though, so before I use up Hardcore's time I thought I'd put it up here to see if anyone has any ideas. It all seems a bit much for it to be an idle control or cold start issue (unless the cold start injector is failing).
I've not had much chance to look at it this weekend, but I've got a solid day and a half to play with it next weekend. As such, I want to go at it with a bunch of areas to attack.
So, Mercedes aficionados of Retro Rides, share your knowledge...
