now, firstly this car exists. I just cant get pics of it just yet. all will be revealed soon though basically, its a w126, not sure of exacly model, possibly a 420se. but, when it was brand new, it was subjected to a hatchback conversion by a professional coachbuilders, using I think rover parts- so itll be 800 or sd1 rear window/hatch. I think it was done within the uk. its that horrible metallic pale green colour, with a beige interior. can anyone give me more info at all? any pics of it at shows, or any info on who may have built it? the only reference I can google up is this obscure spot of it, which I'm certain is the same car forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=4824

crayford used to do a merc hatch conversion in the late 60's early 70's, could be something to do with them?

I used to to see this car regularly in Sheffield around 10 years ago. It had, from what i could see, a rover 800 fastback rear hatch grafted on and looked like a very good job, if a little odd. I used to see this thing day in day out in the 90's so would be very interested to see more of it on here

Do you mean W116, Dez? Both the cars you posted are said variant. A Belgian company called Universal did a lot of conversions on the earlier S's - estates, coupes etc. If it's a W126, there's myriad companies that made them into hatchbacks, gullwings, rag-tops, limousines etc. See www.1000sel.com

so, i kinda own this now apparently theres a full history file inc. loads of info from the coachbuilders who built it, but ive not seen it yet. a few dead cows in here. all in good nick. lots of electrickery too. its a 420se. bad bits- its also a bit crispy around the boot slam panel. no idea what I'm gunna do with it, i just want to see it saved really as its so unusual. so i think itll get welded and MOTed and then flogged on to someone who'll look after it (hopefully!) as i don't have time to do it justice really.

Not sure if it would be wrong to do it or not...
But seeing it low on some amg rims would suit the size a bit better than that huge arch gap its currently sporting..
Wierd old thing tho....

Slightly odd, but appears to be well done.
Interesting to see stuff like this, although I have no idea why one would require a Mercedes with something as common as a hatchback

Excellent !! That has to be the one I used to see in Sheffield in the 90's. I cant see there being another one in the same colour. It has certainly gone down hill since I last saw it

Nice save! A true rarity. The rear quarter glass looks like Mk3 Cavalier to me.
