I know how much we all hate these threads, and for that I'm sorry. But I've just got back from NZ and have realised I need to run something cheap as a daily. Understandably 15mpg average in my RX7 isn't great! Especially if I want to commute any distance at all. So this morning I set about finding some interesting cars, budget of about £800 MAX, expecting insurance to be pretty cheap. (expecting an average of 30mpg or so) Found a nice Citroen AX GTi, some Ford Puma's, Alfa 145/146/147, an LPG'd E36 318iS (I used to have an E30 318iS) and a bunch of other stuff that was suitably different from your ordinary crowd! Then I tried to get insurance! I'm 22 (pretty young, but not REALLY young), been driving 5 years, but of course my NCB is on the RX7! My postcode is in the 2nd best code in the country I think, so not that! I got some aweful quotes - the AX would cost over £1100 p/a, which is ridiculous! So I thought I'd try something I was sure would be cheap - an 800cc Daewoo Matiz. Nope, still over £1k! So I thought I'd try a classic - 1986 Citroen 2CV, but even that via Lancaster came out at £430! Well over budget when car purchase price is considered too! Any idea's people? Companies? Why the world has gone tits up? I'm not asking for much! Thanks in advance for any help! Have a piccy or 2.

NFU mutual. been using them just over a year. rang today to get an insurance quote on an e30 320i - £680 fully comp, I'm 28 and been banned twice (speeding and racing on a public highway, no drinking or anything like that), living in a dodgyish area (central Reading)
Great service and coverage with the policy too, cant fault them.

Ax GTi is group 11 (well in the old system it was) which is stupidly high for what it is, however the GT is only 9!?! Insurance in general has risen sharply for anything making it hard to get a car and insurance for £800. My mk1 Polo is only £130 p/yr to insure but its limited to 3k, garaged and good area.

Thanks, I'll try that company. The problem is that the car will be my new daily, so could do anywhere upto about 10K, will start quoting them a little lower mileage though, as that's always a guesstimate.
I had more of a £1000 budget inc insurance, but look's like I might have to save for a short while.
I'm with Adrian flux atm, and they've been fine, but they quote mad prices too.

thought about swapping your current ins with NCD to your new daily, then getting a classic limited mileage policy for the RX7?

wanted, 25th hour. Required daily, cash waiting

I don't think there're any classic insurance companies that'll insure an under 25 year old on a 200+bhp J convertible sports car, even with limited mileage If I was 25, then yes! I've only got till Feb/March now till the policy runs out anyway and I have another years NCB.

NFU mutual Great service and coverage with the policy too, cant fault them. My family have been with NFU for donkey's years, perhaps due to the fact they are actually Farmers . We had our Defender written off in early July, they are STILL dragging their heels about paying out for it. They are offering £2500 for the 300tdi Defender 90 County, when to replace it like for like it would be double that amount. It's been practially 6 months now and still no resolution in sight... No amount of phone calls has put this right. I've got a bad taste in my mouth concerning insurance at the moment, especially regarding cancellation fees. However Graham Sykes offered me (25yo, good area, clean license, 4y NCB) an extremely favourable quote for my modified E32 735i manual, £325, the next closest was £600. Just don't cancel the policy... The reason I cancelled my policy was because I'm now on a Norton Tradesure policy... Bliss.

To be honest, your quotes don't sound that bad. I'll throw Brentacre into the mix though

Ben90210 - my rex currently costs me about £850 TPFT with a whole bundle of mods. I insured a beetle at 19 with Footman James for under £400 (classic policy, so NCB is worthless - I cannot believe a 2CV is more, 3 years later!), the BMW, if I still had it, would be down to £500ish inc mods! Hence I'm feeling a little put out that I'd have to pay double that for anything that's small and nothing special!

The problem with insuring 2CV's these days is that even some of the late disc brake models have been restored and they are becoming as collectible as mini's beetles etc so there are a lot of them insured for over 10k agreed value. This somewhat pushes up the insurance premiums. After 25 again then your laughing, a lot of people i know have paid a premium of less than a 100 quid .

I vote NFU, been with them 6 years. My old hilux had an attempted break in and within 2 hours of calling them It was taken away with a courtesy car in its place. Oh and when it came back from the body shop, I had a cheque from them for a couple of hundred quid, I called them to ask what it was about and they said its because they are a mutual company (I still don't understand what that means )

NFU were really helpful, just spoken to them. Great company to chat to, LOTS of detail etc! Unforunately they were hideously expensive for me, when I'm 25+ I'm sure they'll be fantastic though, they're definitely one for the books!
*starts hunting for classics* Classic insurance is cheaper. Hopefully I'll get lucky!

I am 23, with 5 years driving and almost 2 year NCB, and on the Acclaim its around £300 Fully Comp, thats with Lancasters on a limited mileage. They were/are the best I have found.
As for the car, the Acclaim would be my choice, 35-40mpg, 1.3 engine (lower tax bracket) 70bhp/800kg, seats 4/5, reliable and you can get a really nice one for your £800 budget.
