I thought I would put this up on here so we don't all get caught out, on Jan 3rd 2012 the LEZ ( low emission zone )will come into affect around London, if you own a Diesel Van, Camper, Motorhome and some 4x4's that in not 2002 onwards you will not be able to enter London and for that matter inside the M25, if you do you will have a £200 fine a day I have put up a link that will help all fellow Retro Riders, you can check on there reg checker to see if your van etc is compliant when the LEZ comes into place, there is aslo a Map so you can see where it is, sorry for the bad news but don't want any of you ending up with a Vehicle you cant use or sell, heres the link. www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/lez/2021.aspxregards Rusty .

It's in an attempt to improve the air quality in London. Remember all the bad publicity about air quality at the Beijing Olympics? I think the reason for introducing this so soon is to improve our air quality before the 2012 olympics.
Modern diesel engines will be ok - but most won't be.
Just be glad that (so far) we're not following the German example and banning non-catalysed petrol cars from our major cities.

Tell everyone you know with a Diesel van, i think this might have a negative affect on the second hand value of the vehicles affected though

I think the reason for introducing this so soon is to improve our air quality before the 2012 olympics. And to avoid massive EU fines - London's air quality is the worst in Europe and has been worse than is allowed for the last five years. Also worth pointing out that anything pre-73 is exempt.

Just be glad that (so far) we're not following the German example and banning non-catalysed petrol cars from our major cities. Be very glad!! It's a nightmare for using a retro... (unless 30+ years old an on historic plates) In germany you may enter with a diesel if you retro-fit a particle filter. And the market for aftermarket cat-conversions is growing. Might this be a possibility in the UK as well? German law allows special permits for smal buisenesses to be excluded from the ban - I'd explore the possibility for that! It all routes back to a EU directive to improve air quality in citys. And those Emission Zones are growing and spreading like cancer all over the country! My Benz can run on 100% plant oil - still I'm considered as the ultimate, 100% lethal threat to environment & people... On the positive side; we can all stick some funny coloured stickers on our windscreen (and my Diesel-Benz was rather cheap - noone wants them these days. Totaly down in value...) Cheers, Jan [Umweltgefährlich = Dangerous to the environment]

Also worth making this clear as it's not been mentioned directly: "Cars and motorcycles are not affected by the scheme." ...This deferred phase of the Low Emission Zone will affect the following:
* Minibuses - with more than 8 seats, plus the drivers seat below 5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) * Larger vans - between 1.205 tonnes unladen and 3.5 tonnes GVW * Motorised horse boxes (between 1.205 tonnes unladen and 3.5 tonnes GVW) * Motorised caravans between 2.5 tonnes and 3.5 tonnes GVW * Other specialist vehicles derived from vans and minibuses - Quote from TFL websiteBefore anyone else posts 'end of the world' type posts, read the information available. www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/archive/16719.aspx

Thats crazy - so things like older transits cant do deliveries etc
this bit doesnt quite compute tho..
So how will they get the message out to people with these vehicles - especially those that live in or just outside the zone..
I'm guessing my 93 diesel powered 4x4 could fall into the other specialist vehicle category - but how would you know for certain??

Simple solution to this that I have been doing my best to abide by for years and on the whole it works.
Avoid the overcrowded festering shithole that is London.

Go onto the LEZ website and run your number plate, were having to sell our pickup truck as the LEZ comes right out to our house, it covers the area a lot of my mates live in, as well as my daughter, annoyingly if it was a year newer it would be fine, but it means we wont be able to run it into Romford or the surrounding areas.
It will make a work vehicle thats not compliant (like our pickup) worth a fair bit less round here, rightly or wrongly i'm selling it before most of the locals find out, buyer beware and all that.

Other specialist vehicles derived from vans and minibuses Does this mean a delica td cant be used in london? Nope, it means hearses and stuff. There's more detail on what qualifies and what doesn't here: www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/roadusers/lez/LEZ-Flowchart-Consultation-for-Sept.pdfAnd anyway, the first time you go into the zone with something that is included you'll just get a warning letter, nothing else. I work in the same office as the LEZ people, and its something that no one (and especially the mayor) wants to do - unfortunately, if we want to avoid millions of pounds of fines (which I'm sure will come from council tax) and / or people dying (depending on how cynical you are about the motivation behind it, but I think there's supposed to be a few thousand deaths a year in London that can be attributed to certain types of pollution), its basically unavoidable.

I wonder if its because its a pick up - my 'pick up derived' 4x4 came up ok on the reg checker.. link here.. REG CHECKER LINKas to selling it if it fails, good call doing it now, but would be better if you advertised it a bit further away from the area

Oh well, looks like the fiat scudo (parts collector) is non compliant, will have to collect any parts that are in london in the bigger, wider, more polluting delica ;D

Its going on ebay in the new year, those further up the country wont have an issue, but locally its worthless if you cant drive inside the M25.
