Hi guys, Need to do a few repairs before winter really kicks in, so I hit ECP to get what I need and I've come across a problem. In the picture below, it is the gasket on the engine from the top pipe on the radiator that needs renewing. I would say it's the thermostat, but with the amount of VW's I've had over the years, I've never had to change one, so I'm not sure. Can anyone shed any light on it please? ... and please don't laugh

Do you mean the gasket between the plastic water housing and the head?? From memory its not a gasket, its a rubber o-ring. I always put some black silicone sealant round it aswell just to make sure its sealed

If you mean the housing on the front of the head, which the top hose goes into, between spark plugs 3 and 4, then like Sammo says, it's actually an o-ring.

Sorry for the confustion, my phone took ages to put that post up and then did it twice.
Yes, thats the part I mean Sammo and Robin, between spark plugs 3 & 4. Thanks guys.
Didn't reaslise it was an O ring, just assumed it was a gasket. It is acually covered in sealent, but it looks like it was bodged on at some point rather than when first installed.

Also, whats the hose called that goes from the expantion tank into the engine? Most of the hoses on euro car parts website just say 'Rad hose'.

I have always called it the expansion tank hose lol! Your best bet is to pop into GSF or ECP and show them which pipe you need.

Usually covered in sealant because the plastic piece has warped and cracked with heat over years (that and people have a tendency to over-tighten them to get them to seal once they've begun to weep). Same goes foe the takeoff on the right side for the pipe that goes to the heater. If it's not leaking though, don't fix it. --Phil

Yeah, if it's a plastic one then they often are pretty knackered. Scirocco's, and I expect any other mk1 golf based cars had an aluminium one which would be a better replacement if you do find yours to be a bit past it.

Ah, that will explain the sealent then.
Was done before I brought the Jetta and that was 4 years ago, so held up well.
It just seems that everything needs to be fixed all at the same time. Isn't that always the way though.

Minidan you got a pm regarding your tranny express.
I got a scrap mk2 1.8 engine. You can have that o-ring, but be quick! I am going to scrap it very soon.
