So I sold my Mondeo to a banger racer, I now need to declare it as scrap. On the old green V5 there was a box for this, but on this new-fangled pink one there is not. There is, however, a box with a bold 'S' in it and the number 17 to its right. Is that what I need to tick? Many thankings! Chris

Ummm wait a seC. Why are you declaring it scrap while its a still complete car? He needs to do that!! Unless you sell it to him as a trader in which case you send of the yellow bit.
Problem with what your doing is , Your declaring that you scrapped it. So in the dvla's eyes you are telling them its no longer a car. But the banger racer could be driving it around still as it wasnt scrapped....
My local scrapyard take cars and they allways sign it over as a dealer (i send off the yellow bit) and they put a distruction notice on it thru the dvla. You need to be doing that, Or signing it over as a car in the normal way.

I agree with Retrowagon. In this case. you sold a car, you didn't break it up and sell the parts, scrapping the shell. I would have got a name and address for the bloke, no matter how dodgy and put it on the V5 and sent it off. Failing that, put the details on the yellow slip and sent that off. You didn't scrap the car, so classing it as scrapped wouldn't be a good idea. If you don't now have the V5 to send off, send the DVLA a recorded letter saying you have sold the car and (white lie alert) couldn't find the V5 to fill out. At least that way you won't be held responsible for any speeding tickets if it whizzes past some speed camera, even if it is on the back of a hiab truck!

Correct answer is, in fact, thus: the only way to scrap a car now is to get a Certificate of Destruction, from, and authorised by, a local ELV recycling operation. In order to get this you must give them the V5.

This a stupid new rule and is simply going to mean people will scrap their cars themselves as normal, but just send of the V5 saying they sold it to Joe Bloggs, 10 Madeup street, Imaginarytown. Thats what I would do anyway.

I had problems scrapping a moped last week, the scrapyards computer system said that the moped was already scrapped so couldnt issue a cert of destruction, i went to dvla office and they said that it was not on there system as scrapped!
In the end i went to another scrap dealer, got a receipt with the reg etc of the moped saying they have scrapped it and went into dvla office with it and handed it all over, been 2 weeks and heard nowt yet!

You couldn't have had a new V5C with no scrap box, or it would have been. If you had the old V5, use the scrapped box. No V5 just send em a letter. If you went in, you should have asked them for confirmation of what they told you in writing. Seems a whole lot of trouble to go to. Was it in your name? BTW I read somewhere that motor bikes and mopeds drop off the computer after a few years if they are not taxed. Maybe somebody can confirm this?

What actually happenend in the late 80's early nineties Swansea's computer was full to the brim. If you think about your home PC back then, it had about the capacity of the average mobile phone now. Same difference for them. So in order to create space for new vehicles until the new computer was up and running, they removed all vehicles that had registered no "activity" for a certain period back onto a paper register. These vehicles, moped motorbikes whatever they be are only returned to the system once an application is made for the number or retax etc. Hence why if you find a vehicle and its not on the database, fear not, it may be one of the thousands that are still not on the system. Obviously if it wasnt on the sytem in 84 anyway then its the old V765 and inspection route.

Huh? How could it be scrapped if you have a very current (3 month old) V5C? Did you take it with you to the DVLA? Sorry not disbelieving you, just it doesn't add up and wanted to know more background. Did you try to sell it to the scrap yard? As a vehicle, seen as you had the recently issued V5C? The would have been the best route, instead of the running about to and from the yard and DVLA.

You're right, I just read it again. So the answer would be to fill out the yellow slip, as it been sold into 'the trade'. Into the trade needn't be to a car dealer or dealership, it actually says that on the green and blue V5C.

Dez, that's bad news, 14 months is time enough to have a SORN expire, and we know what that means...... FINE!
