I test-drove this this morning: It's not a done deal yet, as it's got one or two issues which I've just priced up (clutch is right at the top of the pedal, idles a bit high and one or two bits and pieces)...the seller has got someone else going to see it in an hour or so, if they give her what she wants for it I'll have missed out (but will have saved myself a clutch change), if they don't I'll be piling in with an offer. ;D ....but the brakes. Ohhh dear. They had a reputation for being found wanting in the retardation department if I remember rightly, and whilst it doesn't appear to have any fluid leaks, it fulls up dead straight and the pedal itself doesn't feel spongy....is it just me? Would there be anything else causing that, or (assuming I do end up buying it) am I just going to have to plan my braking 500 metres in advance? Drives like a honey though. Turbine-smooth, quiet and dead straight. Part of me thinks I should just have bought the damned thing, if it's gone when i ring back I'll probably kick myself.

they are a suprise after driving a car with a servo , more modern stuff are way over servo'd
so yeah prob sounds about right , brake bits are dirt cheap so if you get it id suggest a overhaul to make sure they're 100% , i run one of these and with em all ajusted nice and in good order you manage to stop ok , just takes some ajusting to thats all

Right that's another £30 knocked off.... I've had one before back in the mid-90's, I'd forgotten how nicely they drove. Brakes aside. LOL

yeah welcome to braking without a servo, sounds fine to me. you can adjust the handbrake cable from the handbrake lever in the car, there is a nut on the end of cable to do it. you don't have to brake any earlier, you just need to hit the peddle harder ;D ;D
there might be nothing wrong with the clutch, just the cable needs adjusting (a couple of locknuts on the lever on the gearbox). from memory as the clutch wears the biting point gets nearer the floor

I think it's always a bit of a shock using un-assisted brakes when you've been used to servo'd ones. I test-drove my (servoless) Bond after overhauling the calipers and brake lines, and could have sworn there was something up but I think it's just that I was used to borrowing a servo-assisted modern for a while.
Hope its still there when you ring back!

Yep its the servo less system that does it.... Thats a late ish one anyway so you have vw1 calipers which are better than the early ones, A set of greenstuff (iirc) pads work wonders. I had em on my bready and driving that was bloody nice. One thing that might help , Is change the fluid. I know you say it doesnt feel spongey, But neither did mine, I changed the fluid and it made a world of difference to it. How much were you thinkin of paying if your able to give up that info? And if your planning on keeping it stock ive got a a few of those hubcaps kicking about you can have for postage..... Also if theres any lil trim bits, Mirrors, Winders , engine bits needed. Ive got loads still

Academic now, I missed it. I had a horrible sensation I was gonna be buying a load of fiddly work, so it's probably no bad thing.
Thanks for the help, guys. ;D
