This is just a feeler for the minute as I really am reluctant to sell, but after the conversion I've spent enough and I just don't love it enough to carry on
I'l start with whats up with it so you don't waste any time reading the spec if its not for you. When the ignition is turned on the fuel pump is not priming and I'm 95% sure this is an earth issue. I know this for very good reason, as I've already had 4 different ECU's on it so far.
I'l now go on with the spec of the car and explain the problem further after.
Its a 1986 D plate 5 door GL in metallic jade green (dare I say a "rare" colour)
MOT till mid may 2011
Taxed till Jan 2011
Shell has 104k
Engine has 217k! (wasn't a problem for me as I drove the donor car home and it pulled hard, and I have fitted some replacement parts to the engine, but I have a spare rebuilt PB lump to go with the car that I planned to fettle and fit later on)
Pirelli P slots with 2 good tyres, 2 have about 1k left in them
lowered 60mm on supersport springs and matching shocks, look fairly new
lots of original chrome around the windows, early 7 slat grille with chrome rim (although this is worn off a bit)
GTI seats, jetta gti door cards
Running MFA clocks and stalks, all fully functional
Early GTI 4 button steering wheel with jade green vw badge
GTI golf ball gearknob
Non sunroof model with quarterlight front windows
Excellent shell with very minimal rust, sills are 100% rust free, never welded
Early GTI arch spats
Half tint rear lights, smoked side reps, smoked front indicators
gti exhaust, with a nice OEM gti polished twin pipe backbox
I have personally converted it from a 1.8 carb to 1.8 8v digifant, I drove the donor car 35 miles home, ran well, pulled very hard, but suffered from knackered tappets which I have replaced.
Everything in the engine bay is pre 90 spec digifant, all wiring looms including the interior loom, so no bodged wiring here.
Heres some pics...
Currently running a matt black bonnet off the donor car (the original is scratched and I planned to respray it)
some during the transplant
Now to the problem. At 1st it wouldn't run due to the original ECU blowing, so I fitted another, sam problem. After lots of forum reads I found the earth strap from the rocker cover to the coil to be at fault. I fitted a second one, also another battery to chassis earth and one from the bonnet hinge to the ECU heatsink. Bought a 3rd ECU and it fired up, ran well, I drove it back from my garage home. Only problem was a slipping clutch due to my greasy fingers all over it when I fitted it! No big deal, it will burn off after a good blast. Exhaust manifold gaskets were blowing, so I took off the manifolds and fitted a new inlet mani gasket and new exhaust manifold gaskets. While I was at it I fitted the vacuum hose through the bulkhead to the clocks so the MFA would function correctly. Then I made the mistake of flicking the ignition on without the earth leads fitted, which I'm almost sure caused my 3rd ECU to blow. Put the it all back together, tried again and nothing. Fitted a 4th ECU today and still nothing. So now you see my dilemma, I've literally put my blood and sweat into this but I can't go on much further with this, I'm a competent mechanic but an electrician I am not! I'm hoping to try one last ECU in the next few days and triple check my earths again, but if it doesn't run, then enough is enough! Only other bad bits to mention are a dent in the passenger rear door, laquer peel on the roof and a small dent in the passenger wing which should pop out OK.
If it comes to this I would like the car and ALL my spares to go with it, as I need my garage back to put my partners car in the garage.
Spares are as follows;
Complete GTI rear beam with discs, calipers (one is brand new), handbrake cables, handbrake lever
Spare rebuilt PB top and bottom end
Various spare digifant parts, injectors, inlet manifolds etc
Radiator
3 door doors
bootlid
bonnet
flexi brake hoses
late spec gti steering wheel
brand new 16v master cylinder
4+E gearbox and driveshafts
clutch cable
slam panel
debadged single light grille
rear lights
original grey velour GL seats
grey parcel shelf uncut
lock set
gti calipers
dorr seals
plus lots more I forget
I have no idea what to value this at, I just want to see if theres any interest, its a nice looking mk2 that will go well when done (the engine pulled hard in the donor and nothings changed) so I'l say £700 with everything I have, or swap me with a mk2 gti, preferably an early 5 door. Theres a lot of moneys worth of spares alone, and it would break my heart to have to strip this car after building it myself. The car is in Lincoln.
