Pick it up in the morning, guy at the pub said I could have it if I moved it. Sadly though, the cambelt has snapped, but the car is really tidy, inside and out. Save or frag?

Save it if you have the time and money to fix it. I can't see any trouble in selling an 'Alfa Romeo, just had cambelt changed and head refurbished'.

Pretty sure the 1.8 is a clearance motor so may just be a case of bunging a belt on *, try turning the motor over by hand, the 2.0 usualy destroys itself if the belt goes, pistons smack the valves so hard it wrecks the bearing shells , of course the engines are worth as much as the car (and prety hard to find) the reason i sold my 155 TS, felt like i had a time bomb under the bonnet, great things to drive though. *ha, two day mare, probably worse belts to do though, best to change all the tensioner wheels and water pump at the same time, cant remember if the 1.8 has a balancer shaft like the 2.0, efectively means it has two timing belts with two lots of tensioners, sometimes the balancer belt will go taking the main belt with it

Either save it or give it to me and I will.
My understanding is that if the belt goes on any TS, it takes the valves with it. As Markgenesis says, if it happens the bottom end needs looking at too.

If the cambelt has snapped its far cheaper to replace the head with a good used one, and you will need to change the bigend shells to prevent them going shortly after you change the head (ive had to do this on mine!)
The 1.8 has no balance belt so its a little less complicated to do. I have a good head from a 2ltr going cheap if it would help fella, its the same on the 1.8 and 2ltr.
The hardest job will be getting the sump off to do the shells, its a pain! Theres a place in barnsley that do the shells for £35.00, cheapest i found.
Go for it i reckon, great cars to drive if its a good one.

I have an idea for a unique alfa. . . . and i think it might just work.

weell - what do you have to loose? Check the engine - check parts prices - if it's too expensive, sell it for spares. Win and no expenses. If the spares are cheap enough (2nd hand head etc.) - you got yourself a very cheap Alfa

I had valves meet pistons on a 8v 2.0TS, from memory (this was in the early 90's) fixing it cost me around £600. I still shudder at the memories of paying £45 per exhaust valve.

Watched one sit on local gumtree for about 3 months with a slightly broken engine (something similar) for scrap money. Personally I would weigh it straight in a use the money towards something a bit more interesting tbh.
However if the engine is somehow not imploded then you have nothing to lose but the price of the cambelt kit and service parts - and your time.

It is worth noting that late 90s alfas are pretty much worthless.

I made a few quid buying, fixing, running then selling 156s with busted cambelts (or more usually, the cambelt had been changed but the balance shaft belt hadn't so when it let go, it took the cambelt with it!) The bits to rebuild the head including guides and valves, gasket sets and belts and tensioners, was just over £200 from my local motor factors. In each car, I've dropped the sump to check the big ends and never found a problem. I ran one 156 for two years with no signs of bottom end trouble and sold two cars to locals who are still driving the cars two/three years later. I would pull the head off and assess the damage. Budget for a new variator if it hasn't had one. If the pistons are well battered, find a new engine.

Well, thanks for the input guys I've sat and had a think about it, and I don't think I'll be getting it done, I have a T4 with a kippered gearbox and a little 6N2 Polo I need to give priority. So now it is the decision to sell it as is, but it's worthless, or strip the good stuff of it and take it for fragging. All monies will go to the bloke, so I'm not bothered either way, and he was going to weigh it anyways. Tomorrow will be D Day, I'll sleep on it ;D

Would it be impossible/impratical to put in another lump that isn't Alfa shaped? Ford/Vaux with suitable gearbox, driveshafts/hubs etc?

Would it be impossible/impratical to put in another lump that isn't Alfa shaped? Ford/Vaux with suitable gearbox, driveshafts/hubs etc? A Vauxhall engine in an Alfa!? It would be far more dignified to weigh it in. When I had my 155 several years ago the best price for a belt and tensioner kit was 200 quid and I doubt they're got any cheaper.
