Well, long story short. Swmbo made me a very happy man yesterday morning as she announced that we'd be having our first child in roughly 8 months time so this got me thinking, what would make righteous dad transport? Bare in mind that I'll probably never be able to afford something cool ever again and it doesn't have to be hugely sensible (first person to say Picasso gets a cyber slap) oh and I'm a complete slave to forced induction but am open to the concept of v8s and screaming 4 pots. so far I've thought: lexus ls400 jaguar xjr Saab 95 aero sd1 vitesse please feel free to throw suggestions into the ring and pictures are always appreciated Ross ;D

check what you can fit a baby seat into the back of, we had a nightmare finding one that would fit properly into the back of a mk2 Astra, the belts were to short or the buckle caught on most of em so that the belt was not pulling flat or in the right direction, had to buy a pretty expensive one in the end as it was the only one that would fit.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Get an estate thats long enough to get a pram in lengthways along one side of the boot. Loads easier to get shopping in/out when the pram isn't laid straight across the back next to the tailgate.

Clearly a Ferrari Mondial is the only sensible option! Congratulations on becoming a dad. In all seriousness though, I think the Jag XJR sounds the best option so far, although the LS400 would be the more sensible option. When I was born my parents had just finished their trip around Australia so I came home from the hospital in one of these: Nothing wrong with a big 4x4 with a baby capsule in the back, although being a two-door I can imagine that it might have been a bit difficult to access the rear seat. By the time I was a toddler though, I started climbing in and out of the back seat by myself and they were getting worried that I would fall out of it! So it was traded in for a sensible brand new car.

Believe me, an Estate or Hatch with 5 doors will be a godsend! However, clever pushchair purchasing can mean you can get away with a smaller car. I used to get 2 kids, a double buggy and the missus in an EG Civic hatch and it was a tad cramped - Once I got an Estate, things where a lot easier! BMW do a lovely range of V8 E34 estates that would be suitable Congrats to you both! Rysz.

My daughters 8 now and her mum still runs the same mk1 Escort she's had since little'un was almost 1 year old, modern stuff will be safer and easier to live with but generations of kids have grown up ok in old stuff.
You don't need a massive estate car, my black and flamed 2 door mk1 escort running 40's on a lively Xflow took me and the missus and 2 kids all over the place, it was my daily, took us on holiday and everywhere, its just that modern baby seats are often to big for older cars rear seat belts.

Congratulations. The only sensible option in an SD1 Vitesse. 5 doors with a big boot and decent rear seat space - check Nice grunty V8 - check Awesome - check My Dad had a Vitesse for a while int he eary 90s, when I was about 4, so I may be biased but as a kid it was nice to have your Dad driving something a bit different - and something a bit faster - than the average Escort/Cavalier/Prarie.

Congratulations!
Of your initial thoughts I'd say Vitesse too but then I'm also biased as that was my dads car through my teens ;D
You don't need as much as the marketing people will tell you and there are options for buggies and the like that collapse or even come apart to fit in small places. You'll have to check there's enough room for the first rear facing seat but then small modern cars aren't over endowed with interior space either. Seatbelts can always be lengthened if need be.
The only vehicle we sold specifically because of schild seat issues was the Sun-tor and that was because once ickle_seth was big enough to need a forward facing seat using a three point belt, there was no way of fitting such a belt in the van as the side windows and cupboards were there. Prior to that she had been in a Britax seat that was designed for a lap belt.
Oh, since its a similar age to the cars you've listed how about a Volvo T5 estate?

I agree with this. Just get a luggage rack on the boot for the buggy! And congrats!

Congratulations! ;D 8-odd months, you've a long way to go yet fella... Had a similar dilema and went 9-5 Aero estate. Yes you don't need an estate but, I bought it with the express purpose in mind to be able to sit in the boot eating butties at the beach/campsite/beauty spot/etc in the pouring rain during a typical British day out. The fact that it can crack 60 in sub 7, tops out at a very silly speed, has 5 star NCAP and does 35+ on a run (28 in urban stealth mode) are all just brucie bonus's Get the best out there for £5k. www.saabscene.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=31655084BB
