Up until about 2/3 years ago, I only ever drove old 'tat' of 15 years+ and never worried about it. Now my main car is a 2009 130i, and while I never worry that it's not going to start...in the back of my mind there's a little thought which goes "if it doesn't start then your mole grips/hammer/wd40 isn't going to get it going again"

I bought a 1998 Seicento for max MPG win and winter duties. :/
The only other motor I have (in a roadworthy state) is 27 y/o and has been on full time duty for the last two years. It's just not fair on them. (lol)

I only own a retro. The modern belongs to the Mrs. Only time I drive her car is to go work on mine

all 3 of my fleet are 20yrs + now Only 20+ years?! Our youngest is now over 40. We got all sensible last winter and bought a newer car for the season while I did the Herald's engine swap. It even had a plastic dash and cloth interior!

good point about the mole grips not fixing a modern
i spose unless its under 5yrs old then its just as likley to need regular bits n bobs doing to keep it right apart from rot

Youngest car is 29 here. It starts fine and has never broken down. Only shortfall in the winter is getting the car warm and dry inside.
A modern car would be great though, particularly from a fuel efficiency perspective

I have a car to use but its not mine, and my car hasn't let me down to "need" to use it. a modern motor without buckets is nicer to drive to work, but my 88 rocco is way cooler!

Last few years ive had stuff 10 to 15 years old, for most of the last 20 years though ive been driving stuff thats 30 to 40 years old, never seemed any less reliable than more modern stuff, and usually cheaper to keep on the road, if you don't ignore faults as they develop and keep on top of things theres usually less "instant" fail items on older cars.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

My transport is 64 Landy or 95 bike, the newset I've owned (and had a fair few). Never had a car policy that isn't classic. The missus has a 95 Hilux Surf but always uses it so not much backup. Newest car I've had is an '86 Merc 280SE.
Thinking of flogging the bike for a Lexarse for winter though; route to work is icy country back roads. Heaters are looking appealing...

Don't do the modern thing - had a 1999 Hyundai Accent for a week and took it down the weighbridge. Terrible car. My Carlton and Bluebird never failed to start and drive happily over last winter despite both being over 20 years old and having over 100K on the clocks.. was doing 300+ mile round trips at good speeds, no trouble at all. Both had niggly little problems but nothing I couldn't get used to. Just liked that I could do the servicing all by myself.

My mate Reg hasn't owned a car built after 1939 for about the last 10 years, they're all hot rodded though. Currently haven't got a car till the Carlton is back on the road lol.

My other half has a 2003 Passat TDi for family/kids/work run duties - and its currently proving to be the most troublesome of the fleet . Whereas for me, its modified 1983 everyday for me..

I'm wondering how many of the 'old car hardcore' pull relatively big mileage or do a lot of motorway miles...?
My 97 Range Rover and t' missus 05 Accord both pull 20k a year mileage and will quite often do a 300/400 mile trip at the weekends up to Norfolk or up to Yorkshire....
I quite often use my Camaro for longer trips up to about a couple of hundred motoway miles if it's just me going, as it cruises very nicely at high speed but long journeys the seats can get very uncomfortable and being late eighties it's not all that retro..
Now the winters here real retros are not all that fun as dailys for me, my rangie 's heated screen and heated leather seats see that I'm happy on a cold morning start, plus the fact that the heaters chucking out properly hot air after half a mile just makes it better..
I've got about a 70 mile round trip comprising of a few miles of tiny twisty rural b roads 20 miles of motorway and then half an hour sitting in city centre traffic not many real classics i know that could do that lot well with minimal maintenance day in day out..
to be honest I'd rather take my 11 year old transit than most retros at 7.30 on a frosty Monday morning..
