...just saw this over on Pistonheads, thought you lot might like it too! The good people of New Zealand clearly have too much time on their hands, not that such an affliction is a bad thing, mind. The premise is simple: take an old car which is hoping for a quiet retirement. Ignore its wishes completely, fit huge tyres to the driven wheels, lose as much weight as possible and then go and race across terrain that the base-vehicle was never meant to encounter. Oh, and have a hell of a lot of fun while doing it! It's going to be made into a TV show over there apparently, one which I might have to watch online should I find the means. HERE is the Pistonheads link. To save you clicking that though, here are some pics and some vids to demontrate what it is. Chris

I think Robor has been doing this for some time.
It helps to have a few acres or more.....something that seems to be in abundance over in NZ compared to over here.
If I happened to have a few 'spare' fields, Amanda's horses (her big want!) would have to get used to being terrorised by me blatting around in all sorts of dangerous, loud and obnoxios contraptions. ;D

Looks like awesome fun! My folks would never let me and my brother do this when we were younger Rysz.

Me and my mates all had field cars and bikes when we were in our mid teens. Mine was a battered mini but the others had fiestas and all sorts. We used to rag em round the fields after the harvest or race round the pit stacks and access roads.

This was pretty common where I grew up to, good old field cars - I learnt to drive (and crash...) in a knackered old mk1 metro.
One of my mates even went as far as getting a roller on the back of a tractor and making a pretty good track in one field after harvest. Worked great till bits of straw stuffed up the inner wings and got set on fire by the brakes on his mk1 Fiesta - though the danger with that car was going through the floor! lol ;D

We've had metros, novas, volvos, saxos usually at mates farms but I tore up my dads landscaping with a nova when he went away for a week once ;D You can still the tracks in the lawn now

Love it, I had a number of Sierra's for this activity - Still engage in this tomfoolery with the Starlet at Harvest Time.
We had a Sierra that I rolled and then we stripped it to the bare bones, reversed the wheels and used to take pot shots at the rear with a 12 gauge while one of us was driving (fuel tank had become a can in the passenger footwell at that point) - Utter, Utter Stupidity but still makes me chuckle when I think of it.

I think Robor has been doing this for some time. ;D Every year after harvest we rotivate a track into a field and then roll it repeatedly flat, it ends up being a pretty good surface, though if it rains it's game over and if it doesn't rain at all it's incredibly dusty! I've custom built my own "paddock hack". It started life as an E21 LHD 315, which they didn't even make in this country. The inner wings are rotten and the car was pretty grotty, so I gutted everything and turned it into a field racer. The awfully restricted 1.6 was replaced with a decent 1.8 with weber straight from my E21 316 in my sig. All panels and glass were removed, anything that could be unbolted went in the bin. The suspension was replaced with 323i items which are stiffer than standard, and the springs were cut and lockwired properly into place. It runs E30 14" hartges with meaty tread with 25mm spacers. It's incredibly fun to drive, it weighed 750kg on our weighbridge. Racing pics: Cars don't stay nice for long!

Chris, you didn't grow up in the countryside did you? As has been said, it's done the world over but the filming of that stuff in NZ is ace We're pretty hot on race prep... And safety gear. Though it does tend to get messy. BMX helmet. Check. £5 Volvo. Check. Smug grin at being last man standing. CHECK.

It's amazing fun, the only problem is that cheap cars are much harder to come by these days with the price of scrap being so high. These days you won't get a car much cheaper than £150 without being lucky!

Yup, I look at some of the stuff we've destroyed and people would get in a proper flap about it. So maybe it's not bad thing the prices have gone up ;D
