Where on a Moggy Minor is the chassis number..?

Having nightmare problems with the fine institution that is the DVLA. To cut a ver, very long story, we never received the V5, so we went through the usual route with the new keepers suppliment, they said there was a discrepancy with the paperwork, wouldn't tell us what. It transpires that now the chassis number I had given was incorrect, so they now require an official bill of sale which includes chassis number, sale price, date of sale, to "plead" our case, but they now believe that the V5 does not belong to this car. They are now also aware that the tax expires at the end of this month, and will be no doubt be checking to make sure we have taken the car off the road.

There should be a rivetted plate below the regulator box on the bulkhead, but I'm guessing this is missing?
On the passenger's side there should be a stamped plate at the top of the bulkhead, but that will only have the numbers on it, not the letters which accompany them/
As it's a pre-58 car the chassis (or, more correctly, car) number should start with an F.

I seem to remember there is a metal plate with just a stamped number under the bonnet but that is the body (production ?) number and not the chassis no.
Why not pay the fee to Gaydon for a copy of the build details ?

There is another possibility - DVLA's record of the car number may be wrong. I've seen more than a few cars presented for MoT where the chassis number on the car isn't the one on the computer (normally transposed digits, or "0" as"O", "I" as "1", leading zeros trimmed off, prefix codes missing) and the older the car the more likely this gets. Your MM could have had the number copied by hand several times on the old (buff) logbook then mangled by 3 generations of swansea computer. I'd request local office inspection on the car to try and sort it out.

I definitely agree with SOC and tickman on the incorrect computer thing, any car which was registered before the computer system was installed is ripe for this. I've seen old cars with incorrect model years, body number, wrong number of seats, engine cylinders, you name it there's a typo for it.

I had a 1993 VW T4 that the DVLA had recorded wrong, all because the last MOT'er wrote the wrong VIN number on the mot cert!

I'd download a V888 form and send it ,together with £5 to them. They'll send back copies of the microfiche details they hold as far back as they hold. This will show every change of owner, notifiable changes and also number plate transfers ( a favourite time for 'errors' to happen ).
The V888 copies may highlight dicrepancies that you can be bothered to spot that they may not and help your case.

It should also show when the typo error took place , more power to your case then.
