Hi there, made the decision to part with the 'Green Meanie', I'll start with the basics. Shes a 1974 1200 running a 1200 engine with twin port heads, lowered (& adjustable) beam with the added bonus of a disk brake conversion which is perfect if you choose to upgrade the engine further down the line. The original wings are long gone and have been replaced with pre '67 wings coupled with the small 1200 rear lights and sloping headlights which feature the rare 'clear lenses', long bonnet & long engine lid with Popes nose light, all presented in a tasteful shade of bright green  It's also running a set of Centreline wheels with 4 good tyres & also has a 'period' guttermount roofrack (very handy!). The interior is standard as far as the seating is concerned, the rear parcel shelf is covered in a 'Vivien Westwoodesque' fabric. It also has the rare front parcel shelf which is covered in the same fabric to match. It has a 4 x 45w CD Player with 2 6x9's on the rear shelf and an Edge active sub under the rear shelf (nice punchy ICE setup). She's got a short MOT of a few weeks left (20th October iirc) and taxed til the end of October 2010, the only work I can see for the MOT are the indicators. Basically they're not working, I've changed the hazard switch which didn't resolve the problem & I suspect there's a short somewhere as it's popping the fuse. This problem has been with the car for about 2 months now & I still haven't found th etime to sort it, this is why I'm parting with the car. I simply have no spare time to do the little jobs that keep an old VW happy, if there's no takers I will get the indicators sorted, re-MOT the car & I'm sure I'd get over £1000 for this bug considering what's on it. I might have the offer of another car soon which is a bit newer so I'm willing to sell the bug as is with a short MOT. I'm looking for £700, I'm confident that once the indicators are fixed she won't need much, maybe nothing else to pass an MOT. fuel gauge is also dodgy but that isn't an MOT failure.
The rear valance has a dent but I have a new replacement one which I will give to the buyer, I was planning to convert it so that it had a removable valance but again no time to do this. This is a descent bug that looks the part, if you don't want people starring at you then this isn't bug for you, she attracts ALOT of attention and will be missed (especially by my little girl who loves her).
She had welding done for the MOT last year which included Framehead lower panel, plating of the heater channels, inner arches back & front. All welding was undersealed straight after the welds had cooled down So everything should be well protected. I replaced plugs, points, condensor, dizzy cap, leads etc about 6 months ago & the front wheel bearings were also replaced as the N/S one developed some play (changed both seeing as the front end was up in the air). The bug was fitted with a cacky aftermarket air filter when I got her. This has been replaced with the correct oil bath type filter, sometimes the original parts are best.
I'm still using this bug and have done daily since she passed her MOT last October, through rain, snow & frost she got me to work without a fuss. She'll sit at around 60mph quite happily but I tend to poodle along around 50~55 which she's happy with, bear in mind this isn't a bug that has sat unused on someone's drive for months/years but a bug that has been used. Aside from the indicators all other lights, horn, wipers, washers (electric washers) work perfectly. She starts, stops & starts again without any hassle. Engine could do with a bit of a tune up as she's a little lumpy within a certain rev range but doesn't cut out or anything bad & will always accelerate if required. Checking the tappets and a play with the timing would probably resolve the problem. All in all she's a descent plucky litle bug with alot of life still in her, if I had the time & space I wouldn't be selling her & the problems would have been fixed by now but I realise these issues haven't been fixed in the last few months so I've resided to the fact that owning an old aircooled isn't something I've got time for in my life & I love this car too much to see it being neglected.
Looking for £700 with the rack, parcel shelf etc...Ideal opportunity to get a bug without resorting to buying one off eBay that hasn't turned a wheel for years & needs a full rebuild for £500, if there's no takers she will be MOT'd and will be sold for alot more so grab her while she's cheap. Any Q's please ask. Thank you.
