My car is going into a friends body shop next week for some welding which requires the engine to be removed.... I like the I dea of fitting my 73 saab 99 with PAS. However.... Fitting 900 power steering to a 99 is tricky due to the locatoin of the pump. Some one sugested EPAS. This is becoming quite popular Using parts from a corsa... However... Does anybody know any modern cars that use an electro hydraulic system instead... My plan is to fit a 900 PAS Rack and use an electronic pump seems somewhat simpler than cutting up the steering column?

SW20 MR2's use electric power steering, but its a massively complicated system with speed sensitive ECU's etc...
Corsa option seems the best.

Thank you dubmaster, this is the question that I wanted to ask! But instead retro fitting EPAS or a Corsa system into a Nova. I know it seems silly but because of health reasons it would make it easier for my wife to drive.
Anyone done this? Or can paste a link for more info?
(Sorry, I don't want to hitch your thread)

the corsa power steering column is a common fit on minis - particulalr those fitted with other usually more heavier engines.

Have you asked around/searched on saabscene? Someone's bound to have done it before and Saab scene is the most mind-bogglingly technical of the saab forums.
IIRC mounting a 900 rack on the 99 will be a significant PITA as well. It certainly won't just bolt on.

Quick look on eBay shows - Astra MK4 (98-04), Zafira, Citroen Saxo, Peugeot 106 and others have electric PAS Pumps. In fact I think our Skoda Fabia 1.4 diesel has one !

Corsa is quite a common conversion for old Fords as well.

Unfortunately the it fits on this so it will fit on that is not so straight forward esp using power columns. I have a an 82 99 with a 16VT and when i stripped it out, checked and designed some mounts for a 900 rack as they are not to difficult to make. They key issue is the angle of the rack to steering column. I was concerned about this especialy considring the ratio so discounted a powered column as the torque and mounts would be a head ache. There is a guy in scotland who is currently making a stage car that is going down this route check uksaabs.co.uk. I am still looking at a seperate electric pump single speed with external switch ( no speed signal) Have a look on my page here as i have a load of pictures showing parts of the build and there should be some with the 900 rack in place. s380.photobucket.com/home/gengis-khan/recentuploads?page=1

My old Saxo VTR (1997 model) had an electric PAS pump and quite a simple-looking setup - certainly no speed sensitive stuff or electronics, just the leccy pump run through a beefy relay and heavy cable so it was turning whenever the engine was running and a normal-looking PS rack and plumbing.

HE HE! I love this Forum.... So many answers so quickly! I have checked some of the saab forum and found a few threads regarding the Corsa conversion. However I think I would like to try a Hydraulic set up... Just to clarify.. Is the Saxo 106 a Hydraulic system then?? This is my next port of call then!

Here's the thread I did started about it a while back.... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=75882I've since found someone who does the trigger modules for less money; and they're working on a more trick setup at present. My module has a potentiometer giving a range from off to full assistance. The guys I found afterwards are doing one that you can remap with a laptop; so it could work like mine, or give a narrower range with better fine tuning ability. Joe

Cheers Joe, Have already read your thread before posting this. A guy on uksaabs posted a link! I really want to try and make a hydraulic system up... But this will be the next option if its a no go.
