They are absolutely superb cars for their time. Mine was fairly tuned up with a shorter diff so accelerated at the same rate as a 325i up to 120mph. I averaged over 30mpg in my time with the car.
Engines are easily tunable, reliable and will see 200k easily. I had another with 180k and was still pulling strong.

i was eyeing one of these engines up yesterday. guy i work with had a e30 318is on the ramp so i had a good look to see if it would fit into somthing older and cooler. 150bhp 30+mpg (according to him) front drop sump hydrolic clutch very short, for a 5 speed, getrag gearbox should be a pretty basic ecu as they quite old
looks like a very good choice for an engine swap, imo

Had an E36 318is, superb in every way was on over 300k miles and felt as fresh as a daisy, 35mpg minimum on a fast run, more if reigned in to sensible speeds, great handling, properly comfy, satnav verified 135 flat out (on a private track) , never let me down ever, it's one I miss..

Very good engine, specific to that car and created as a homologation special. Heavy dual mass flywheel best replaced with I think an E21 unit.
All in a good engine afaiac!

Great cars/engine. Ive run mine for 3 years as a daily and track car, ive given it so much abuse and its needed next to no attention.

Heard only good things about these cars, everyone has literally raved about how good the engines are.

Quality engines, very reliable if maintained properly, and not hugely complicated, yes there's a bit of electrical stuff but they started in the 80s so only the same level of difficulty of another 80s engine

Great cars. Not massively rapid but a brill all rounder. No-one's mentioned that timing chains can let go and the heads can crack (like mine did )

They're easily chipped as mine is. All the electrics and ecu are self contained so only need a few wires to run. My mate runs one in his '82 e21 316, a guy on here has one fitted to his mk2 escort.

As they have timing chains some people neglect them and don't replace the tensioner meaning the chains stretch and wear the guides and sprokets out. Make sure you listen to the engine before buying, otherwise your looking at £300-350 in timing parts and gaskets alone, ask me how i know! That engine was destined for an e21, the one in my daily e30 is mint and has needed nothing in 25000 miles. A good engine will be bombproof. Mine gets 30-33mpg driven hard!
