For a couple of weeks now, I've been thinking of trading my Scirocco in for something a bit kinder on the bank account. I bought the car when I was working full time, and it's been grate, I've enjoyed owning it for the last 2 years, but I'm now back at college, and the insurance/tax/fuel bill is a little much for me to manage as well as funding building my mini. So I'm afraid, it has to go, or the mini's never going to get anywhere.
I could get all sentimental about getting rid of the Scirocco, but in all honesty, as much as I'd love to, I can't imagine I'll be able to afford to keep 2 cars when I go to uni in a years time, so with that in mind, the Scirocco (and in fact whatever I buy now) would have had to go in a year anyway, as I'm not selling the mini.
I've been going through all the options, and the thing is, I still want something fun and retro, so as financially sensible as it would be, I'm not just going to go out and pick up the first £300 taxed and tested '90s hatchback I find. I'm not going to.
My pick list up until yesterday consisted of a 1.3l mk2 polo coupe, or a 1.6 diesel mk1 caddy pickup. Trouble is, I've had a mk2 polo coupe before, and it was fun, but I want to try something else, and the caddys go for silly money for what they are, plus you only get 2 seats.
Now this morning a thought came to me, what about an A-series metro?
- I've got a fair few friends into their mini's, so could get bits cheep, including a rather fun engine
- They're free to lower, I've got another mate who's very into k-series metros, and has all the hydrogas stuff I could even need
- I should be able to get the same economy as the rocco, which is manageable, and the tax and insurance will be much cheeper.
- I'm not worried about rust, I can weld, and I don't mind it looking tatty, I know my way around the a-series, and parts are silly cheep, so I'm not worried about reliability either.
- I've got some rather nice 13x7 et-7 revo's sat next to me in 4x101.6 with new yokos on them.
To be honest, I can't think of a reason not to buy one.
Soooo... Inspire me, make me commit to it!
