I have had a 06 Mondeo estate for a while now and have finally got my in gear to replace the front disks and pads. Bought the parts today. I have enough tools to do all the STD stuff but do not have any Torx bits or sockets as I stopped tinkering on cars a fair while ago. What range of bits and sockets sizes would I need to cover most tasks on the car? I do intend to keep it a while so investing in a set would be nice rather than buying 1's and 2's By size e.g T min to T max and E min to E max.

By size e.g T min to T max and E min to E max. AAAgh. I'm now thinking about differential calculus. Thanks! To answer your question, a rail of 7 common torx bits to fit 1/2" drive is about a tenner at machine mart.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I bought a nice little set from Machine Mart. Not very expensive, but has a decent range of internal and external Torx bits. 3/8 drive. I think it was this one: www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/pro151-29-pce-metric-socket-setYou can get bigger sets - I'm usually pretty skint so £18 was about right for me. It did all the jobs I needed it to when I stripped my e34. Usually my cars are pre-Torx! Handy things to have in the toolbox though!

Don't buy machine mart torx bits... they are a pile of s**t
I bought some to do a job on my housemate's ford focus - it snapped using only a stubby handled 3/8th drive on it.
Torx/Hex bits are false economy to buy cheap as they cause more swearing than it is worth. I havent had a problem with other sockets and bits from machine mart, but I have snapped several of those torx bits under basically no load... maybe just my bad luck though?

Halfords Professional torx socket set is superb. Good quality and has just pulled diff and rear beam off a Sapph in a few minutes with a Snap On gun.

get the halfords professional (now called halfords advanced) ones.
they're tougher and cheaper than the snap-on, with the same warranty.

And easier to take back and replace if something goes wrong yeah, don't get me started on actually *trying* to get anything replaced by a snap-on man. THREE AND A HALF MONTHS to get the simplest of things replaced, the ratchet mech in a 1/4" ratchet. even then i only got it cos i went over his head to the uk customer services deparment so he got a bollocking off his boss and was told to bring it out to me same day. even then the new one is sloppy and inprecise compared to the £12 clarke pro i bought in the meantime. the snap on one is about £45. ive never used snap-on since.

Been impressed with the second hand Snap on 3/8 ratchet and metric rail I bought 25 years ago is still going strong with no chipping of the chrome etc. BUT Must admit I was not impressed with their returns when I tried to return a split socket. Took one of my finger nails off at the same time Mechanic friend had to threaten all sorts to get it exchanged. Back to the torx bits. very frustrating shopping at Halfords! Anyone remember shopping at PC world with an 18 year old trying to tell you what to get when he had never seen a PC let alone used one? None in stock anyway and I want to do the job tomorrow so Off to machine mart managed to get a Clarkes prof female socket rail but no male rails in stock. Traveled through Bristols little Somalia to get it. Interesting to see that many internet cafes in one place Have to dig out the tool box out and see if I heve some torx hanging around that will let me do the job. Cheers for the thoughts and advice.
