Morning all My little bro has a Volvo 123 Amazon which he has the urge to make faster (as it only does mid 20's to the gallon, might as well fit an engine that still does that but makes a whole lot more power ). He is thinking along the lines of either fitting a 760 turbo engine/box or an 850 T5 lump (but what box ect to use) but what are the pro's cons of each conversion (as he can get a donor vehicle for about the same money), what rear axle would be wise to use and what are the brake options? He is handy with the spanners and is happy to take his time on it, but would be done on a budget. Cheers Craig

Not sure on the exact issues with an amazon but I know the T5 lump (or any of the 850 lumps) need some big'ish mods to front subframe and or sump to fit in 240's etc so cant imagine the amazon being any easier. That an the gearbox sourcing can get expensive (manual out of a 96o possibly but I may be getting mixed up) If it were me i'd be looking at the 7/9series engines and any other associated bits.. either that or for a different route the six cylinder out of a 960.. 200bhp but definately a bit longer. Have seen one squeezed in a 240

how about a D24T with a bit of adjustment to fuelling and boost. mmm... lovely smell of diesel! the later intercooled ones of those have like 122 (?)bhp standard and loads of torque so with the fuel and boost turned up you couldsee 140-ish easy enough with LOADS of nice 6 cyl torque, and WAY better economy than 23mpg, plus with a straight pipe it'd sound liek a tank

not much as much space in the amazon as the latter volvos. both the 4pot turbo and the 5pot can be fitted with an appropriate box. i think with the 5 pot though because it was designed for transverse you ether have to cut the bell housing and spin it a few degrees or the gearbox will lean over about 30 degrees. the steering colom however isn't such an issue on these unlike 240s as it is steering box and well out of the way. i assume from your economy your running webbers or similar on a b20.
i recon if its a good one best to leave it alone, maybe sell it and get a more lowly 121 to start with and then cut that about.
if you want forced induction the volvo 4 or 5 pot will hit the spot. 5 for the sound track. or maybe consider a nissan s14 lump, or a SAAB turbo bolted onto a omega box. N/a you might struggle to squeeze a b30 in, so forget volvo and go for a v8 or a v6

Think its the box from a 960 you need to fit a 5 pot volvo engine but don't know much else about fitting them.

Please mind that the 200/700 axles are wider and have a different PCD (IIRC). The 760 Turbo would be the easiest though and the red blocks can handle more power then the 5 pot white blocks.
But I would through an ordinary B200/B230F with a downdraught weber and a M47 5 speed box. Better performance, better economy and no twisted chassis, balance for raw power.

ours goes faster with the monty/ maestro perkins diesel in it......made adaptor to fit box and get 45mpg all day. engine bay is narrow due to subframe so you could be limited

I'd just be fitting a B20 with twin SU's or Twin webbers, good for a comfortable 100hp and 30mpg. if your going down the conversion path I'd imagine that the 240GT motors would be the simplest, I'm sure there was a turbo in the 240 series as an option?
