Hi everyone, really struggling to remove the paint on my imp and its really starting to annoy me!!! Plan was to remove all paint to bare metal and still want to, So far I have tried Nitromors, not impressed at all, only taking one layer off at a time would cost me 100's of pound to do it this way! Cheap electric da sander, wasnt very good so I decided since I want to paint my car Ill buy a nice big compressor and also a air da sander, still takes so long and really struggles to take the paint off it would take days and days to get no where! So what have others done? My bonnet is rubbish so have been trying different things on it including brake fluid which did jack all except clean it up!! Heres some pictures Car, not my bonnet will be getting one though. making an enclosure for my 3hp sip 50ltr compressor this took 10-15 mins with a DA sander (just the door) and brake fluid Surely there must be a more simple convenient way to do this, what do you do? is there an industrial/better solution to crappy nitromors? Cheers for any help coming

you can look at aircrafst stippers but they're even more ££££
try roughing the panel with 40 grit so the stripper can get under the edges , good thick layer then a bin bag to keep the fumes in....its a nasty nasty job
what grades did you try on the da? you could hit it with 60 grit
only other option is blasting which will be £££

Get some 80grit discs for your DA and you'll have the car stripped in a morning.
You need a very harsh disc.

you wont run a proper d/a off a crappy 50L compressor. have you tried an electric d/a, the newerones are actually quite good.

could it be the da isnt running at full /good speed?
ive stripped a few modern 2 packed cars ...id expect you would get a door bare in just over an hour and use maybe 4 discs?

I has this problem last year when stripping the factory paint off the alloy panels of a Land Rover. Nitromors USED to be good but they have reduced it's effectiveness over the years so no longer the "bee's knees" for automotive paint removal. Aircraft paint stripper is the best but horrenous price.
Go to motor paint factors and buy the strongest paint stripper they stock. Will be better than Nitromors but still might not as good as aircraft stripper. I found using the red nylon brushes on the wet paint stripper was the most effective way of removing the factory paint off my Land Rover but very messy and full protection needed as splashed stripper on flesh isn't nice.

I thought it was working ok but dunno really, I'm just suprised its such hard work, I do have a cheapo 420w random orbital sander which isnt much better (thought the air powered one would have been amazing!
Wonder if I should go and buy an other electric one thats a bit more expensive £50 jobby?

The prob is with your compressor, its got the required 14cfm to run the da, but it cant do that at the required psi...
I used a Sealey Electric DA to strip a Renault 5 back to metal, took a good 3 days and very very numb hands... Paints not designed to come off!!!
You could try the da pad in a powerful grinder, then once you hit metal switch to the a to get rid of the swirl marks...

^^^^ that looks like a possible solution! Cheers Guys. Someone I know have recomended a grit blaster company local to me too who are apparently cheap (never as cheap as youd like I'm sure lol) so out of interest I'm going to ring them tomorrow see whats what otherwise its time to make too much noise, alot of mess for a lot of time! Cheers Chris

go at with a grinder to save a few hours work...then spend days sorting the ruined metalwork trying to hide scraches and grinder marks

i work in a restoration company, we've tried a lot of products. so far i still think nitro moors is the best, yes it won't just fall off, but use a course file (i use a lead shaping file) to cut scraches into the paint as well and it does work. shot blasting can ruin pannels if not used lightly. grinders will make a mess too. if anyone knows of a really good solution i'm all ears

Like Des said your compressor is fair to small, ive got a 200lts tank on mine and thats only just big enough for some jobs. Id hire a large compressor, you would have it done in a weekend. Ive seen people strip paint with flexi disc things, its a bad idea as you will fill you panels with grinder marks and put loads of heat in the panels. Your compressor should be ok to spray your car if you use a old non HVLP spray gun.

Buy these.... cgi.ebay.co.uk/Strip-Paint-and-Rust-removal-Angle-Grinder-Disc-115mm-/250653002162?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item3a5c1549b2put them in a grinder and away you go. I stripped the mini in a few hours using 3 or 4 of these discs. On the flat they last for ages, but will wear quickly if you insist a bit on edges or seams etc. They don't leave scratches in the metal and unless you are pressing like a mule, they don't build enough heat to cause distortion. That ebay seller is spot-on too, fast delivery and reasonable prices. They often do multi-buy deals too so have a look at his shop. I intoxicated about with various chemicals and sanders etc, but the multiple layers of paint on that mini resisted everything I threw at it until someone on here recommended these discs...Accept no substitute.

I am planning to use a paraffin torch to strip my paint on my saab 96 shell. Have tried it with a butane torch and scraper and it worked really well!
However the steel on the saab is quite thick so am not worried about warping it, not sure what an imp is like!
I am using a paraffin torch as I don't have much money and paraffin is much cheaper than propane refills!
