Hello everyone, I am starting a new venture importing the 'original and best' Lada Niva 4x4. It still makes sense, starting at £7,995 plus VAT when a basic, new Landie starts at £20k! It's an incredibly capable beast - and it's proper retro... take a look at www.markkey.co.uk for more info. If anyone fancies a drive, let me know! All the best, Mark

I've wanted a Niva since before I could drive! I didn't know they were still in production. Best of luck with the venture!

I thought it was emissions that caused Lada to give up in the UK, I seem to remember them making an amazing roadster

Wow - if one of those is £7995, how much for a new Riva?

As above: If these are new vehicles you are importing how are they to be registered ? Do they meet current emission standards?

so much want, good luck with it, these should sell well here. you don't happen to know what it would cost to import a new UAZ van do you?

It's got a c02 output of 233 g/km on the standard non lpg engine, which is pretty high but not illegal. It'll cost £400 odd quid a year to tax it, which is a lot for a cheap car. I recon you'd need to go for LPG. The new golf Gti with a 2 litre turbo 200bhp engine only produces 170 g/km.
It's an interesting idea though.

just a shame the 5 door doesn't meet type aproval. think the french solution of dropping in an old peugeot diesel lump appeals most.

I wonder what would happen if you added another or different cat and got the emissions down a bit? Would that class it in the lower tax bracket or would they just go off the manafacturer's figures? These are fantastic off road by the way and as they're designed for sub zero temp's they're pretty damned good.
Take it you have spares back up OP and how does warranty work?

'distributed injection with electronic control' according to the link in the original post. These do seem very cool. It says on the link in the first post that they have an 'Independent front and rear axle.' The front suspension's clearly independent, but is the rear too? looking at some of the videos on youtube a lot of the older ones seem to have a live axle at the back. Edit: what happened to the post asking if they were still carb fed? That's what I was replying to.

It's based on the C02 figures declared by the manufacturer and stamped on the v5 document. The only thing you can do is change the fuel type to lpg and reclassify it I believe.

I will quote Mr. Burns from the Simpsons and give 'my personal thumbs up' to this project ;D They began importing Nivas to Finland a few years ago when the factory got the emissions under control again, before that the last time they were imported was in 1995. In 2008 the Niva sold pretty well over here and there were even people standing in line to get one. A workmate of mine has got a blue one, he bought it to go hunting with it, they are very suitable for that purpose. The price was about 15.000€, which is pretty low bearing in mind the high Finnish car tax and the high emissions.
