Never done a Readers Rides thread before but here's my new toy. As arrived, a 1974 registered Manta 1900SR. This car has been off the roadfor 20 years. After sorting the headlamp aim and refitting the brakelight switch it went straight through an MOT (well after missing it's slot due to overheating on the way in, blocked rad). On the way home it broke a rear spring. Had the chance of a set of lowering springs through the OMOC, but decided to keep the height standard. So, next off to the DVLA local office to get the tax class changed to historic (Dec 72 built) and get my nice free tax disc. Only took about 15 minutes, very impressed. After flushing the rad etc using denture cleaning tablets (thanks to a tip from this very forum) I started stripping the car ready to go and get painted. It's going back to it's original colour of Signal Red, which is orange to the rest of us, though I did toy with the idea of that metallic orange that the Focus ST came in. I'll try and post more updates as they happen.

Looks in good condition, nice find ;D On the way home it broke a rear spring. Had the chance of a set of lowering springs through the OMOC, but decided to keep the height standard. started read that and thought for a moment you were going to modify it go for the ST orange it'll look awesome

It'll hopefully get a set of Minilites, and some different front seats but that'll do for mods for the moment. I've got the other one as original so don't mind playing a bit, but don't think it'll ever be too far from standard.

oooh, aftermarket wheels, careful once you start down this modifying road there's no return..... I've got a nice set of 17" multi-spokes which would look good on there

Can't wait to see is painted. I'd really like to see one in a deep gunmetal grey, some lo lo 14" wires and a box of switches to control the hydrolics.
Can I ask how you were able to get the taxation class changed to historic? What kind of proof did you need?
I have a Opel Kadett C on the same "M" plate and would like to find out if its possible to do the same. Mine is 1974

its not necessarily the year the car was registered, its more when it was built. ie: it has to have been made before the last day of december 1972 to qualify for historic tax. (free tax disc) i've known people with cars from '73 that have got historic tax because they've prooved the car was made before the 72 cut off point. this can often be letters from the manufacturers (ford etc,) to back this up. but your problem is that i don't think the kadett c went into production til 1973... sorry.

Nice project you have there I think a few select upgrades/ modernisations wouldn't go amiss on that (as you have a very nice original blue one)

I have a Opel Kadett C on the same "M" plate and would like to find out if its possible to do the same. Mine is 1974 In my case I had a letter to the previous owner from the A series registrar of the Opel Manta Owners Club confirming that it was built in Dec 72. Alongside the letter were photocopies of letters from Opel showing selected chassis numbers and their build dates. As the numbers were sequential and my one fell between two mentioned on the letter as Dec 72 it proves mine to be historic. I've no idea why it took a year and five months from date of build to be registered, my other 1900SR was built in May 73 and registered June 73. I would guess with a different Opel model a letter to Vauxhall Customer services with the relevant details would hopefully get you a build date. This is basically what the OMOC did years ago with a number of cars, and the resulting letter is the one mentioned above.

15 inch rims will look sweet but shame it's not going a little lower. Please tell me the exhaust trim is on the way out too! Nice car mate.

Looks like a popular colour lol. Nice to see your car is still about Gav, according to the club register it was exported. I'm guessing you're in Ireland.

aaarrggh!! you have that same problem as people calling my kadett coupe a chevette!! back in the day, opel was opel, and vauxhall was vauxhall!!! and they scratched each others backs but the best designs, build quality was the german version of the brand, i'm afraid, not the british!
you'll never see a manta 'a' with vauxhall badges, or a kadett coupe!
sorry, just wanted to get that off my chest. cars coming along nicely matey!! ;D ;D

Well of course when the Manta A was made Opel and Vauxhall were seperate brands with their own different products. From about 1975 the products started to become badge engineered with the Ascona/Manta B and Cavalier being essentially the same, and the Kadett C and Chevette sharing most parts except engines strangely, with Opel (1.2) and Vauxhall (1.3) retaining their own designs. Of course the Coupe bodyshell was only offered on the Kadett.
