My dad tonight expressed an interest in a "useless car" as he put it, and by means of utterly tactless questions I found he meant a 'mid-life crisis" car, but of course, he isn't having one of those... Anyhow, he doesn't carry people much, max one passenger, and doesn't haul stuff any more. He wants something tasty, a bit classy, and looking to buy when his current Felicia runs out of MOT come October, or else early next spring if the Felicia takes him through another winter. Spend - up to £2k. Age - nothing too old, he isn't capable of maintaining a real classic any more (which is a pity, he had some great ones when I were a nipper) Requirements: presentable enough to mix with our eclectic car club chums, accessible enough for the bad days when his leg is stiff (so no low-slung cars!) So far, shortlist (high possibilities): Shortlist (low possibility): Definite refusals: Just thinking - I think we would like to find him something a bit 'hard' if its a cabrio. Doesn't like jelly-mould cars. In fact, find me an 80's american soft-top (preferably GM, preferably Camaro) and we'd be all over it...

My short dalliance with the world of the Deux Chevaux was, in hindsight, entirely symptomatic of the ol' mid-life crisis. I'm big and ugly enough to admit it now it's all over.
So my advice is to buy cheap, then when he realises it's all been a terrible mistake and that he should stop being a plonker and grow old gracefully he can sell up and make a profit, before returning to the real world from whence he escaped.
Which is probably no help at all. ;D

I bought my 'mid-life crisis' car last year - before I was 40. MX5 or Saab vert - the old 900 shape would come into the 2k mark for a good one. Alternatively, an Audi 80 cabrio is worth a look and would fit the maintenance element. If I only ever had 1 passenger - MX5

Current vehicle collection: 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero convertible - in mid-life crisis yellow No new retro as yet ... all attempts to sneak one onto the drive have failed.

If someone offers you an SL for 2 grand i'd run away really fast, don't look back, and don't get you wallet out.
Plenty of choices though i reckon if he's flexible about a soft top, Porsche 944, Jaguar XJR, Merc coupe, etc etc.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Here's my MLC car. Bought it last week for the princely sum of £2k. The roof comes off and smiles abound when the turbos spool up!! It needs stuff doing and I'm going to farm out the cambelt change to someone but I'm fairly happy with it so far. If you shop around there's better ones than this for sale for the same price or cheaper, and n/a ones are cheaper still and you don't have the worry of a turbine letting go.

Nothing screams MLC more than an MGF or MX5 ( nothing personally meant to anyone who has one

Oh noes, no imports, because then my insurance wouldn't allow me to drive it Barchetta is nice, although very uncommon here - also the Saab 900 is a good suggestion but it's the [image] tag in the OP that isn't working XJS/944/300zx too high-maintenance/expensive to upkeep, otherwise they'd be good options. Also ruled out an RX7 FC for the same reason.
