Hi Guys
I really fancy converting a van to a weekend camper type thing,
I don`t want a kitchen or eating area but i do want a bed for me and my partner and one for my 6 year old daughter,(Also any idea how to do a kids bed without a Pop top?)
Whats the smallest van i could use?
As it would have to be my partners daily driver,
Also it would have to be cheap not T4 or Mazda Bongo prices,
Cheers Adrian

I'd imagine the old 'caravan interior' route would be best. Get a van wide enough (perhaps a crewbus) and have the rear converted to beds. Your little one could lie in the middle as there's easily enough width for two adults and a kid in stuff like swb Transits etc. As for size of van that would depend on the size of you I guess! A Meastro/Escort van is going to be horribly cramped if you're 6 foot four inches.

Can you lay in the back of a Bedford diddy van? If it's long enough you can make bunk beds in the back of it. If you're very small, that is ;D

If your gonna want to register it as a camper you'll need too meet specific criteria, some of which include windows rear of the driver, a table to eat at, somewhere to cook, a sink with running water etc etc the details are on the VOSA website, day-vans don't count as campers. I mention it as it might influence your choice of van and what you do to it. Sizes have changed over the years as well, my SWB transit is shorter and only a couple of inches wider than the SWMBOs double cab 4x4 pickup daily driver so don't right one off as "too big"

I'd go for a bedford midi, make pretty good daily vans and would suit small camper, forward control makes van quite short, or maybe a nissan urvan if you can find one. toyota space cruisers are also brilliant. and have windows and curtains already! the 2.0l petrol with manual would be one to go for.

did a conversion at work for someone who wanted a kids bed added to a camper (sorry don't help with teh actual van choosing bit) made up socketed plates shaped to the screen pillars and rivetted them in with some big steel rivets then a couple of spring loaded poles completed the thing.. local upholsterer made the cloth bit and it worked a treat.. I'm 15 stone and it held me ok.. van was mk3 transit
