My car just decided to fling the bonnet up at the windscreen, bending it (bonnet) in half in the process.
Only 60 mph on the a30, literally next to where a young girl was killed in an accident last month...
Go.

wheel come off or bearing obliterate itself I think, though the wheel was ok as it was aroun 20mph with no one around! The wheel bearing went around 50 mph and locked the offside front wheel :S no other damage luckily though

The AX's exhaust disintegrated, causing a massive backfire that did this to the backbox: It sounded like someone had shot at the car! I almost had a heart attack, i had to stop and recover my nerves after that....

My Nova 1.2 Merit (four door saloon, haters!) decided traction was overrated on the M60 ring road. I was only going about 50 as it was tipping down with rain. Those of you who know that bit of road will understand.
I spun across three lanes of traffic and went up the embankment backwards! Fun!

Go. i had a hillman imp bonnet do that right outside the police station, luckily it snapped the hinges off and vanished over the roof.

My Viva got hot once in traffic.
My mate used to have a Pug 106 Quicksilver. Was following it one day and the spare wheel departed from under it and flew toward my Metro. Managed to avoid it somehow.

Nowhere near as impressive/dangerous as losing a wheel or bonnet but propshaft rubber doughnut started disintegrating at 70ish, a WTF brown trouser moment as the drive train suddenly tried to shake its self apart - luckily it didn't fail completely and I was only a very short distance from home so could keep it under control and then limp home at about 15mph

I will get round to finishing it at some point

The rear brake lining fell off the shoe on one side of my old 106, as I was braking coming up to a busy roundabout (and I was going fairly fast and braking late to start with)
The pedal went to the floor, I pumped it and managed to just skid to a halt about 2 feet into the rbout. Such a horrible feeling!

I think having a car catch fire is pretty scary. There's a primal in-built fear of fire, and when it's dancing all over your pride and joy as you're driving it, it makes for a nasty situation. My Mk3 Escort wasn't exactly my pride and joy, but I did quite like it. It caught fire as I pulled into a motorway service station, and I had to drive it around the carpark looking for a space away from any other cars before getting out and tackling it (luckily I had a fire extinguisher).
The brakes failed on my Mazda 929 Estate as I was braking for a roundabout. That wasn't nice at all. Luckily there was no-one directly in front of me, and I managed to swerve onto a large grassy area to my left to avoid crashing into the car on the roundabout. Driving it home with just the handbrake wasn't very nice either.

I've had the exhaust explode - 2CV had an ignition fault. Loads of cracking filled the exhaust with petrol, finally got a spark and BOOM! Blew the crossbox apart.
Had a toughened glass windscreen shatter and blow into my face too. That's not fun. BANG and the glass is gone!
Have to agree with fire though. I've had a couple of cars try incinerating themselves. It's not nice.

One of many highlights was the sump guard falling off my mates CF van on the M6. I was following it and the errant guard sliced a big hole in my front wing before flying over the roof and landing on the opposite carriageway.

Out on a fairly quiet bit of the A38 in my victor, went to pass up three cars and an articulated truck doing 40-ish up a hill... hoofed it, dropped a gear and just coming up to the truck there was a BANG, severe vibration coming from under the car and oh joy, another truck coming the other way out of a junction. Held the throttle down in a do-or-die choice... when I got home one bolt had come out and one had sheared from the torque converter, leading to the vibration. Just the other day I'd been heading into town on a dual carriageway, pulled off, went to park up against a kerb, gently nudged the kerbstone and the front left lower wishbone sheared causing the suspension to collapse a-la-clowncar. Porsche dealership employees thought it was amusing, and the call to the RAC got 3 vans full of RAC guys interested to see just what the car was. To add insult to injury the exhaust fell off on the tow home. that was more embarrassing than scary though. I think that car had it in for me for a short while. Other time was coming down a steep hill into Bristol in my mama's Fiat I gave a push on the brakes and the pedal went to the floor, approaching a stopped car. Thankfully pumping the pedal several times got half the system back. One of the handbrake pins had jammed up causing the handbrake on one side to bind slightly. Boiled the fluid right up to the master cylinder causing it to gas up.

Probably the worst ever (for me) was discovering I had no brakes at all at 60mph approaching the peterlee roundabout on the A19. 2 lanes of queued trafic in front of me, nowhere to go, no way to stop. Luckily I was driving a mini, and went straight between the two lanes and over the roundabout into the grass in the middle without hitting anything. When I had a look, I'd lost both the adjusting bolts from the back drums, which let the pistons pop out of the cylinder, and knackered the handbrake too.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

DAF had a moment where it thought it was a toyota. ;D
My 2002 seat ibiza lost its brakes aproaching a rather tight S bend pressed the brakes went to the floor with no braking effect. Scareist thing was that nobody could find a fault with the brakes when it was pulled apart. I blame electronics.
My old Uno used to go through handbrake cables at a rate of about 1 a fortnight. The first time that happened was fairly scary
