I feel quite guilty about creating this topic but time is of the essense and I feel you guys are best to ask! I'm fond of chopping standard springs as much as the next guy, but I've never heard about chopping coilover springs. I'm in a bit of a bind. Wheels day is, well, tomorrow and my 9" coilover springs are about 3.5" too long and I've run out of adjustment. In an ideal world I would of ordered 5-6" springs but I've only just decided to put this plan into action. I'm tempted to follow the same principles as a normal spring chop, and make sure the top cap seats adequately. Before I go ahead tonight, is there anything I'm not aware of? As penance, here is my E28 with severly chopped springs (I hope to emulate this drop tonight...), and proof it did actually drive

I've chopped them before I just ground the end so it was flat. I'd buy some more though for after the show.

As long as they sit ok you should be fine short term, just grind a chamfer on the end of the cut coil so it sits a bit more flat on the seat. Just remember that you'll raise the spring rate substantially when cutting them!
Long term, the spring seats are usually alloy, so with out a nice flat spring end you'll probably eventually wear them out.

I would buy new! They hold their value quite well should you wish to sell either pair. I've sold pairs of 2.25" springs for £3o, and they're only £45 new.

You're absolutely right and I 100% would normally, and I might still after Wheels Day. I've actually bought several sets of RD springs and looked into getting short springs a few months ago, the least they do is 7" IIRC. The springs I need I can get from merlin motorsports I think, but are more expensive.
Money's not the issue here, I need them approximately now as they're getting fitted tonight, or very very early this morning. I only decided to go to wheels day yesterday, hence the rush!

Fair enough rob cant see any issues tbh. I had 6" springs from Merlin on the Polo, they were more expensive but the coating didn't crack off like it does on the Rally design ones. For long term springs its probably worth paying the extra £10,.
