Nice easy question ladies & gents.
Has anyone here had experience of - or knows someone who has - shipping a car from Australia to the UK?
Was wondering what sort of cost it might be

10 years ago i worked in an import/export bonded warehouse, obviously this pricing info is now out of date, but it used to cost £500 for a full size container to come in from Oz (£1000 to go the other way for some reason) before taxes and insurances etc etc.
I asked because a regular used to send Minis and jags out there to be stripped for spares and he had a car contact out there, i wanted to bring in an HB Fairmont coupe to replace one i'd had in me yoof, course i didnt realise they were piggin expensive to buy over there until i started getting some quotes back, out of my price range.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Never exported to the UK, sorry. Have imported from the UK a fair bit though. I've always used a local Mini Specialist whenever I've brought large stuff in. They ship via container load, so it's easy for me to call in a few favours and steal a little bit of space. If I were you I'd be having a chat to the importers local to you. They'll a least point you in the right direction.
Don't forget it's more than just the cost of getting a container and import duties. You may find the car has to sit in quarantine for a while, or that it has to be thoroughly cleaned before it gets shipped. It can be a legal quagmire to import cars and the more you find out before you ship it, the better. Different combinations of country of origin and destination can have different legal requirements too.
Oh, and don't assume that cars in Oz don't rust. They rust here just as well as in the UK. What are you going to be importing, and where from in Oz? Link?

In not looking at anything in particular but a few things I've seen from around melbourne seem in good shape. There's always a good selection of j-tin
There wouldn't be much quarantine here I doubt...we're nothing like you guys!

Considering the distance I always figured shipping anything would be expensive. However it seems to be a well travelled and serviced route, so that may bring prices down. I want to ship a few parts over for my datto at some point, but they are made of metal (manifold and such) so I'm dreading the cost.

You're right, Oz is pretty harsh when it comes to laws in general A mate of mine lost months waiting for an Impala to clear customs/quarantine last year. Still, gave him a chance to collect go-fast bits Bear in mind Melbourne is a fairly cold and wet kinda place, and it is on the ocean. So cars from there (unless they've been fettled) won't be as rust free as, say, Bourke, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Wyalla etc. Then again, out in the middle it'll be a challenge to find anything that isn't Holden/Ford or tough-as-teak 4WDs. If you're serious about buying something, then I'd definitely recommend a personal inspection first. That way you get a holiday too, although you may find yourself reconsidering the desire to leave the land of sunshine at the end of it That and/or have a dig through the businesses Downunder, 'cause it's guaranteed someone will be in the trade of making your particular lust live on the roads. They're a grand source for tracking down worthy cars. And finding out the best way of making retro drive a lot nicer than original. We have a lot of J-Tin 'cause it was so cheap for us back in the day. That and the standard Euro stuff of the era was waaaay too expensive for mere mortals to buy. For years it was a case of Holden v Ford v Chrysler v J-Tin.

Well, I was tempted to ship something either from Oz or California when I get my bonus this time next year. I'm still undecided which area to look at more.
