I've come across one of these: 96P, 70k from new, minter. Black. Cheap. I like cheap. ;D I've heard words like 'head' and 'gasket' bandied about , but I've also seen '45-50mpg' 'cheap tax and insurance' and 'fun' ;D Factor in the fact that I'd look absolutely f***ing stupid behind the wheel of one, and I reckon I could be onto a minor winner. What are they like to live with??

Mine was entertaining (when it worked). Parts changed :
Headgasket Cylinder Head Header Tank Gearbox (Recon) Header tank cap Some Hoses
Coupled with the fact of me doing 90 on the motorway and seeing a car at 90 degrees in my carriageway. Swerved round it and thought "If we'd have hit that in this, we'd be dead"
So it got swapped for our daily.

No idea what they are like to live with but your first statement might irritate the owner and god only knows what it would do to the paint! ;D I love 'em and was trying to persuade Kim to get one as her first car - we settled on the Seicento after she saw this one: Just have to pay for her lessons now... Rysz.

Headgasket is dead easy to change so don't worry about that. Its a small Fiat so just get your Italian head on, rag it everywhere and it'll be ace.

They seem like loads of fun - a "proper" small Italian car, which surprises me given that it's relatively new (well, not new but new enough to have gone down the lardy route like other "small" cars)
I think they're really cool!

Not that easy to change. I ended up making a right hashish of mine. It snapped two sockets trying to undo one of the head bolts.

Small Fiats are great fun, I used to be the proud owner of a 1 litre Fiat Uno with 45 rampant horses under the bonnet. More fun than my Honda CRX VTEC.

Worked in a Fiat dealeship when these were new, 1.1 Cinqs gave damn all gasket trouble compared to the 1.2 Puntos. No p/s on the Cinq. A loose earth strap can fry the ECU.

Once went on a couple of dates with a bird called Marina who had a Cinq . . . chopped it in for a new Polo when it failed the MOT on a rusty fuel tank.

There's a good video on the tube, I think it's an old Top Gear comparing the Cooper to the Sporting. Ah here it is:
