I have my car classic car advertised for sale in a national car magazine & I recently received an email from an interested bloke from Middle England ish. He asked me for loads of extra pics & as much detail as poss.No probs I thought & sent him my photobucket file of the car.He loved it & offered me my asking price there & then. I suggested he come & view the car but stated he didn't have anytime & just wanted to buy it.He said he would send me a cheque & once it had cleared I should send the logbook off to the DVLA with an owner transfer,he would then arrange to get the car collected. Know I'm not sure if this sounds right but surely any person would want to view a car first wouldn't they? If he then finds a stupid problem with the car or finds a bit of rust has he any claim against me?

I would only deal in cash or bankers draft (and even then, I have no clue what a bankers draft looks like...) A forged cheque WILL clear into your account, and the first thing you'll know about it being bent is when the bank snatches the money back out of your account weeks later when they realise it's not legit. Thn you've lost both the car and the money! I'm not saying he's definitely a scammer but if he wants the car he'll be able to work around getting the money to you another way. Assuming the buyer and cheque is legitimate and he then has issues with the car, if it's a private sale he has no comeback - caveat emptor. I wouldn't accept a cheque though, for the reasons stated above. Cash is king.

i recntly bought a car off here without seeing it first as it was too far away to view before buying. although i paid a deposit and went with the cash. in my mind i had bought the car and had no room to complain. the seller is well trusted on here and the car is spot on if it is genuine then give the cheque two weeks to clear and he has bought the car as is. no room for complaining when picking the car up. make sure he knows this before hand and don't send the V5 off until he has picked the car up, also make sure he can't pick the car up for two weeks after first recieving the cheque. does sound a little odd but if it is genuine the buyer wont mind waiting a while. if things seem a little pushed along then gut feeling would say forget it.

Even after two weeks though, the bank aren't forced to discover it to be a forgery. Only once they do (which could be weeks and weeks) will they snatch the money back. In the mean time it'll appear as cleared in your account, you can withdraw the money and spend it on hookers and drink and whatever, then find you owe the bank a load of money and have no car.

could also get the cheque express cleared but still demand two weeks clearence time. should be obvious by then if it is going to bounce. express clearence should be three days and about £15 last time i did one.
even cash could be fake and bankers draughts have also been faked up before. try to get a phone number to speak to the guy, that should tell you all you need to know.

What about a bank transfer. I believe these are safe and it's how most companies accept payments from other companies.
As for not wanting to view, well, I've committed to buying cars unseen in the past in a fit of excitement/enthusiasm.

He could even go to a branch of your bank and deposit it into your account

If he does it by BACS then you get the money quicker and his bank wont send it unless there is sufficient funds in his account to cover it , would'nt take a cheque for a car ever.

Heh, I'm about to dispel every piece of advice given here LOL.
I once took a cheque for over two large on a car, no problems arose and i was able to blow it on hookers and drugs more cars the next week.
I also have bought two cars unseen in the last four months, and won another on ebay unseen (a lovely Saab 900 Turbo that the seller backed out of unceremoniously) and both times arranged payment and had them delivered on a recovery truck without ever actually meeting the sellers. In fact the entire deals were done by Short Messaging Service.
So it's not all hooky, sometimes it can be genuine enough!
I would however, only deal in bank drafts now after seeing just how painless that is to do! Or, he could have the cash couriered to you - he can even send a postal order, as he has to go to the Post Office anyway to post the cheque...

all bar 2 of my last 20 cars have been bought either through pm's or text messages, most have been bought hrough ebay or off forums, always blind, 90% of time sent larger deposit anf fetched rest with cash - but then i've never really spent more than £500 on one
might be genuine, you'll never know - if that worried ask him to get cash and drive it to him

Think it's best to explain you don't want to deal with cheques due to it's dodgy nature. If he wants the car, he'll pay in cash or whatever, but do you really want to take the chance? You sound like you don't want to, I know I wouldn't.
