Well, last year me and Mrs GW threw some seeds at the ground as it was the 1st summer of owning a house and being able to try these things. We really enjoyed it so this year we are going a bit further and trying to organise it a bit better. We started by making some boarders out of decking and laying some weed resistant matting: Then this weekend we gave swmbo's daily some ghtto lowness: With this lot: and by the afternoon we had this: weve got a stack of seeds, potato sacks are on the way and we've got some netting and things to keep the caterpillars out as they destroyed my cabbages last year. Next update will follow with planting and things once the frost is gone.

Nice work, it becomes addictive ( if hard work ) Tomatoes in the garden here, everything else grows at the allotment..... With cabbages, I find MAXIMUM security is the basic requirement, same with lettuce as well, vigilance is often the key - check them EVERY day - it soon turns into a war..

Funnily enough I'm slowly removing cars, and bits of cars, from my back garden and intend "growing things" in the future. Planting old cars doesn't work (must be using the wrong rooting compound) so this time I'll be veg as I hate cutting lawns. Must be a sign of me getting old when I enjoy gardening as much as getting my hands dirty on old cars ;D Paul H BTW a greenhouse, even a cheap plastic one, makes you feel like a "real gardener" and makes great storage during winter - mines full of Vespa bits

this is a slippery slope water feature!!?

Lets clear up car terms: "Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence. "Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

growing stuff is cool.
ive had good success with lettice and other green salad type stuff that doesnt have much roots in old galvanised pig troughs, whack a drainage hole in each and they're great ornimental planters that the slugs find it hard to climb up. old butler sinks are good too.
oh, and combining both hobbies, theres no better way of growing tatties than in old tyres!! they can be stacked high as the plant grows so are good on space, and they absorb heat in the sun so the plant actually grows better than just in the soil.

Thrasher - the plan is once the ground work is done, Mrs GW can do things at the weekends while I'm working on the car to keep her occupied Paul - Luckily I cant get cars into the garden, or this topic would be verydifferent. I too hate cutting the grass, hence its all gone. The greenhouse is just out of shot! People must think I am way beyond my years right now! Big End - no water features here, just functional and low maitainence! Dez, I had some good lettuces last year, and the bugs seemed so intent on my cabbages that they ignored the salads completely! We've got some funny potato bag things coming that have the seed potatoes with them too, 3 varieties no less! Got some seedlings in trays now waiting for the cold spell to end before going out, and weve started a net box to go over the middle bed which will contain the cabbages, lettuces and brocoli.

If you add copper edging to the top of the planters then that will stop snails and slugs climbing. If creates some sort of electrical reaction with the slime they produce so keeps them off without having to resort to chemicals. You can get copper self adhesive tape for plastic pots. On the planters (old ? ) copper pipe polished up around the top edge could look neat. blog.gardenersworld.com/2009/07/06/controlling-slugs-and-snails-with-copper/Paul H

Glad I'm not the only 'old curse word' on here who does this sort of thing - just found out last weekend that we've got an half allotment at long last! The other thing I did last weekend was fill my mothers garage with this: ;D

I grew for the first time last year, around november my grandad stopped talking to me for two weeks! Turns out that parsnips are not meant to be 18" long! Hahaha
Just starting digging the patch again tonight (was lovely outside), ready to be planted again.

Studied horticulture in my teens, grew a few choice varieties of my then favourite herb. Smoked very well from what I can remember, allthough memory's not that great for some reason Favourite herbs now basil and I can't wait to get a garden to grow some veg/herbs, graze cattle ect. Council made me remove my plant pot from the stairwell saying it was a fire hazard ffs. On the plus side we get plenty of blackberrys at the right time of year from the overgrown council spec communal grass bit round the back of the flats. Umm, blackberry crumble.

well, wheather is improving so the garden moves on some of the little bits in pots: thats got the raspberry bush, some herbs, beans etc. we got the lettuces coming through and temporary netting till i make up a little frame work and the rhubarb from last year is coming back nicely. got the red onions and carrotts in too. learnt a trick on keeping cats out - shake'n'vac! they cant get the taste off thier paws so the stop digging! apparently no harm to the food either. bizzarre

yeah know the feeling! last year we chanced it and just chucked things at the ground - turned out quite well though as we chose quite hardy plants - courgettes are great, big strong plants and lots of food - we couldn't give them away quick enough last year!

well the garden is coming along nicely. The recent cold spell killed our tomoatoes off so we have some in the house now enjoying the sunny window. Lettuces are pretty big now and about ready to start munching.
potatoes are coming along well, just topping up the soil in the sacks. runner beans are starting to climb and the raspberry bush is taking over.
Also cooked up some lamb the other day with a home made mint dressing....yum.

Good stuff, we also rescued a old greenhouse in the garden from under nettles brambles and ivy and have just got that planted up so we should get some fantastic crops from that.... going out there on slug/snail watch at dawn and dusk though ...beer traps and possibly copper strips going in soon!

Another 'new' gardener here, very impressed with your work. I don't know if it will help but we have put marbles in our pots to stop our cats from leaving their calling cards in the soil and so far it seems to have worked.

just seen this, I must get some pics up here soon. We grown for about 3 years now, but ive completely redone the garden this year to make more use of sunlight and max growing conditions.
Ive raised all our beds (old scaffold boards are your friend, f*ck the homebuild kits garden centres sell) and created a little raised island in the middle of the garden.
All crops were kept indoors until about 3 weeks ago, and then I was arguable a week or 2 early. The prob with kicking everything off indoors is that you lose track of how much you are growing! Last count I had 16 tomatos, 12 chili's, 6 peas, 4 sunflowers, 8 french beans, 8 courgettes, 4 aubergine and 14 sweetcorn - plus our permanent vine, strawberrys, asparagus, rhubard, artichoke etc,
All my leaves grow in old tin cans which live on my log store, for some reason the slugs just never go there.
And the chickens come in about 6 weeks!
Oh, GW, just incase you don't know you wanna leave that rhubard 2 years before harvesting!
