i saw some cool cars this morning, a ropey one of these and one O these then one of these but best of all one of these! i saw it yesterday too briefly with a massive flatbed behind it. never seen anything like it thought it was a plane going down the road at first. spoke to me dad about it on the phone he said its a Scammell Scarab and he always fancied having one for a daily any more info on these and the rough going rate for one maybe needing mechanical resto? I'm really digging them! have some more

All the info you need: www.mechanical-horse-club.co.ukI was quite surprised upon reading that there are only 60 left, as at almost every show I go to at least one Scammell Scarab is on display.

Much as they might bore some people, I love old lorries and buses. Forget Life On Mars, imagine walking down this High Street (oh, the Scarab's on the left behind the Austin Cambridge),a bit of cross-pollination with the background cars thread:

The 3 wheel arrangement makes them very manouvreable in small spaces. Used to see hundreds of 'em working in railway yards when I was a kid. You had to have arms like popeye to turn the wheel on them on a cobbled yard cos was no power steering. The change over to containers for freighting finally put them out of business.

The Dartford tunnel had some in a 4x2 version as tow vehicles for removing broken down cars. The Scarab's were built at Watford I believe.

No doubt your Dad knows about this odd duck then... not sure on that one ill have to fire off a pic see if he knows it, hes helping restore one atm so is more knowledgeable on the mechanics of them more than the models i think his reply to that other photo: Yeah, That's the London road scene I remember around 1963/4 I would guess by the vehicles. Encapsulates all the oldens I like. No RM buses though, only RT's and an RTL's The Scarab is 'typical of the time' as are the FX3 taxis - the newer FX4 and Beardsmores became the norm later. The mini tucked in behind the blackcab would have been very new then. Looks like it could be Oxford Street. what a geek, as if i know what rtl rm beardcars etc are (sadly tho i think i do ;D)

Much as they might bore some people, I love old lorries and buses. Don't start me off. Just don't. This last one is dedicated to the Self-Preservation Society, not quite the same one but I wouldn't kick my Mini Coopers out of it...
