Ben I wouldnt put 10w/40 in it mate, more likely to burn it. 15w/40 chap :-) Steve The second number is more important than the first, so either will do fine. 15w/40 will be a little thicker when cold, but will be much the same at running temp. At really high temps, it may even be thinner than 10w/40. However, I can't suggest a suitable oil for an old Ford - I only know oils for older stuff (like Imps etc.) which run 20w/50.

thanks guys. Steve, thicker stuff makes sense.. I'll buy something appropriately gloopy ;D Cobblers, just the sort of information I was hoping to receive from my 'question worded as a statement to avoid looking too dim' ;D. Don't suppose anyone knows if it matters what way round the temp sender's connected up? I'd best give Matt a shout to see what he still has..

I'm aware of the significance of both numbers chap, I'm only quoting from experience of supplying oils for older cars. Plus, the HCS 950/1100/1300 motors always burn a little oil and leak a bit after they have done a few miles, if it were mine then i would be running 15w/40.

This also makes sense.. but thinking about it, gloop is going to be the order of the day regardless on a slightly tired 27 year old engine.. I'll check the book o' lies and make a decision based on manufacturer recommendation cross referenced with common sense and hope for the best. As an aside, James, I don't think I've ever read a post from you that isn't useful and informative. It's really appreciated

The gauge sender is one wire(from memory) but the fan sender on the rad will be 2 or 3 wire. You could test the fan by shorting the wires going to the sender, if it comes on then the sender is faulty.

Cheers, Steve You can fully expect a post going 'how the feck do you use a timing light?!' post in the next few weeks ;D

I'll drop you a text/call to see what you've got that will be of use Another thought about the down on power + steam is that that the age of the half tank of fuel could lead it to have taken on a bit of water? Just a thought, we'll just top it up with fresh and job's a good'n

Insurance sorted with Peter D James for £600 fully comp for Becky and me as a named driver which is marvelous. £600 may sound alot but you have to remember our ages.. MOT is booked for Tuesday and I'm going to give it one more lookover (and an oil change) over the weekend to make sure I haven't missed anything glaringly obvious. If all goes to plan, then we will definitely be giving it it's first public outing at Brean

^Not bad at all for fully comp - I'd be paying the same if I could afford more than TPFT. Is it unlimited miles?

^Not bad at all for fully comp - I'd be paying the same if I could afford more than TPFT. Is it unlimited miles? Certainly is. Best quote other than that was 10000 miles TPFT with Adrian Flux at £954. I was amazed when I was called back with a price of £580 FC. That's with Becky's 1 year NCB and licence held for the same amount of time. Peter D James are my new favourite insurance company

A minor update.. What I assumed to be the temp sender was the fan switch, and the temp sender is just below it. I worked it out mostly from something Sleeperviva said about 2 wires and one wire (cheers, Steve The fan switch is still not working, but the temp sender was just covered in surface rust. WD40 and wet and dry paper fixed it nicely. I reset the timing today using a timing light I borrowed from Remmoc (cheers Dave!) but I can't say for certain I've done it right... Putting a gallon of fresh petrol made a massive difference and it appears to be back to it's raging 50 odd BHP. Me and Bec gave it a quick pre MOT clean and polish yesterday. I know it shouldn't make any difference, but it's like dressing smart for an interview isn't it.. You can probably tell from my Volvo that I'm not a member of Detailing World, but it looks nice and presentable. The old steering wheel I put on wasn't especially shiny and Becky thought it detracted from the look so she gave it a tickle with the wet and dry and some Autosol to get it looking nice. She also refit straighter than I managed to ;D Retro-tastic 80s rear speakers purchased on here from MiniDan have been put on the parcel shelf just for mocking up purposes. I'll be drilling a couple tiny holes in the shelf to run the speaker wire through. EDIT: sorry about the terrible quality of pics..

FAIL. I can't remember exactly but I think they said Headlamp aim perished wipers (looked okay to me but I'm not an MOT tester..) insecure rear shock insecure seatbelt fooked tyre (the one I asked them to replace BEFORE they tested it..) kinked brake line Not ideal, but assuming I don't find any nasties when finding out why things are insecure then I don't consider it a 'bad' fail

Headlamp aim- will get garage to fix for retest because I can never get it rightperished wipers (looked okay to me but I'm not an MOT tester..) Maybe a little crispier than I remember.. Now fixedinsecure rear shock A bush for one of the extra securing arm thingies like in this pic had popped out. Unfortunately some eejit had done up the wheelbolts so tight that I rounded off my wheelbrace and snapped the 3/8" square bit off a ratchet (though the ratchet still functioned). I'll be tool shopping tomorrow.insecure seatbelt Where the carpet had been out, the lower mount hadn't been tightened properly. Fixedfooked tyre (the one I asked them to replace BEFORE they tested it..) pair replaced. fixedkinked brake line wasn't actually kinked. Was on sheet as 'twisted' but basically was just positioned in a daft way so it rubbed on the shock. Taken off, put back on properly, brake bled. Fixed.So... whip off wheel and possibly the shock, shove the bush back in and take for retest before the end of the week
