Hullo bods, I've been scuffling round in the rafters at work today and turned up a ye-olde numberplate making machine. The sort with the template and the big benchmounted punch, where the letters are riveted on. A bonus you might think? Well yes, except there aren't any Fs and there are no backing plates. The plates I might be able to sort out without hassle, but has anyone got or can point me in the direction of someone who'd have a couple of black F's? Thanks HiveMind. Google is being a dirty pile of bumwee tonight so have a picture I snarfed from pl8s.co.uk instead: I've got most of the bits so I'm not paying £60 for some plastic nastys

Last time I was at Fenland Ford Spares - that place on the A17 outside Boston - I noticed he had a lot of those plastic numbers lying around in the yard, it was a year or 2 ago but he is not the sort of chap to throw stuff out.

I will get round to finishing it at some point

What a great find! Somewhere, I have a load of those straveller washers that are used to attach the numbers.
Any plans to do a few plates on the side? I'm after a pair of black n silvers! ;D

If you try to bang them on then the letters often break .Once on they do actually come loose and you use letters still. What we used to do to speed batch production and prevent them popping off was melt the 'stems' over with a high wattage soldering iron ...old skool authentic The plates themselves were actually quite thin ali that bent easily between your fingers, the press may not be up to anything thicker?

This one is for metal letters and plates, rarer still I believe?
I've got the jig and all the bits, just no sodding Fs, worse case I'll modify a couple of Es but I still need to sort the plates as I'm pretty sure I have to have reflective plates.

Never seen metal letters. I managed to get a missing plastic letter for one of my plates from my local motor factor! They still had a box of them upstairs.

Metal letters were rarer still and had fallen out of favour by the time I became involved . I'm pretty sure that they are the taller pre 1963 style? Check out pl8s and Frampstons ( same ) and measur e the characters . I'm think that Framptons will also buy old plates letters etc to break for parts , again check their site.
You need reflectives from January 1973 .ie midway through K suffix.

I have a set like that, with metal letters (some sort of alloy..) on a 1972 K reg car. Other than those I've never seen metal letters either. I cleaned all the black paint off them, and sprayed the backing black to "convert" em to black and silver.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Actually, you know the numberplate act..... that press there is now illegal to use and the plates it makes are illegal to own too, never mind display on a vehicle. Mind you , I don't think anyone has been prosecuted under this jem of a piece of rights-removing legislation - lots of noise and threatening, but did anyone end up in court?

I'm not so sure, the press is essencially a bench mounted punch and rivet tool, it doesn't make the letters, I think they'd struggle to make that stand up.
I think I'm going to end up modifing a couple of Es to make Fs as they are proving impossible to track down.

I ended up doing similar with my plates - I made a mould of a number 7 as I only had one, then cast it in body filler! ;D That was a totally traveller venture though - I went around the scrappies collecting up all the digits I needed then stuck them with araldite to alu back plates. ;D

You are still allowed the old style plates as the new regs don't apply to pre '73 . Anything post 73 on reflectives ,with those fonts , would be illegal now ( to make but if you already have them you are still allowed to display...yes...I KNOW ) . I haven't heard of anyone being prosecuted for displaying so far but if you've seen the links on ACE ( www.the-ace.org.uk ) penalties for a second offence are severe and I wouldn't want to be showing a too modified car to DVLA simply for displaying the wrong plate font !! Still at least you get one fine and warning first

Oh yes oh yes oh yes! I contacted a guy on ebay selling a similar kit to the one I've found on ebay and he's selling me 4 F's for a fiver. With Grunty's kind offer of vinyl, I'll have some plates sorted pronto
