Hello I used to post here. Then I forgot to come back. More later Anyway. The DVLA has kindly today let loose the MOT failure rates of all cars. Here are two distillations of the data, for cars bought in 2004 (no surprises there) but more retroey cars built 10 years ago. The whole pile of data (1200 pages of pdf is available direct from VOSA but has been distilled into a handy excel spreadsheet by BBC journo Martin Rosenbaum. www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/opensecrets/2010/01/mot_failure_rates_released.htmllink contains link to excel download Handy.

Small commercials would surely be at the top anyway, as they tend to get hammered more, and often owned by builders etc and only get fixed when something drops off. Also surely the numbers of each model on the road would play a part in where they fit on the chart.

Also surely the numbers of each model on the road would play a part in where they fit on the chart. Not really since it's the percentage of that model that fails. I do agree that there are factors at work other than straightforward reliability since cheaper cars tends to get cheaper servicing while some makes are cosseted by super proud owners. But actual numbers of each car is not a factor.

in theory a Jaguar owner should take more care of his expensive car and clock up less miles (or at least do easier motorway miles) than the owner of a J 4x4 Work truck but our Mazda has a better pass rate than the Jag, and although its ten years newer the running gear design is ancient.

Many cars listed as being MOT'd before they were due and I don't mean the odd one? IE pug 307 released 01 has 88,939 cars Mot'd before they are three years old in '04. Now unless there are almost 30,000 307 hackney carridges I cant see how thats correct!

See my post on the other thread but this data is obviously junk so you can't really base any real assumptions on what it tells you.
No Morris Minors had an MOT test in 2007 at all. No Morris of any type in fact. Nor did any Triumph other than Acclaim, Spitfire, Dolomite. Only a few Buicks (not including any 1966 ones like mine which was tested in 2007) no Cadillacs prior to 1971 (except for a '58) nor any Oldsmobiles, Plymouths or any Dodge other than SRT-10 and Ram?
No wonder that VOSA have squirmed to avoid publishing this meaningless mess.

The XL document has been comiled by a jounalist, i take it everyone is checking through the original 1200 page document rather than the XL one as i guess a fair bit has been left out of that for space reasons.

Yes, I am referring to the original VOSA pdf file. Buick has models listed for 1938, 1958, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1997. Total tested 15. Obviously wrong. Not one Oldsmobile in the whole UK. Not one Plymouth. Not one MORRIS even....
Ok, these are old and maybe minority interest cars but if they have left them out what else have they left out?
I can't put any faith in these figures at all.

Ive had a look and not one single vauxhall viva (ha,hb,hc) was tested in 2007. Also in 1969, one Nissan micra was tested and failed. They wasnt launched until 1982. And in 1983, 40% of them failed an mot??? what?
