I've had my Mk2 16v for about a year now, and it's always had the 2nd gear crunch when it's cold. However, it's started getting progressively worse recently - it's getting difficult to select the gear when it's cold; you have to hold it in position and after a second or so it crunches in.
Which is more cost effective - getting a new 2nd gear syncro fitted or sourcing another box and getting that fitted? Bearing in mind I'll have to pay to get this done, and that any box I find may well be in the same condition after 20+ years I don't know the best option.
It's also had a 2.0 ABF conversion along with a lightened flywheel if that makes any difference in terms of keeping the standard box or swapping it for another if that's possible?
Also, can any VW nuts tell me what is the gearbox code on my car and is it shared with anything else?

Sounds like its truly f****d ! I would go for a second hand box.....hopefully someone on here may have or know of one. There must be lots about. I have changed a few boxes for the same reason, but they had all done starship mileage...over 2k usually. Have you checked the oil? could put lighter oil in for winter to help.

If you are paying to have the work done buy a good used transmission and have it installed. The parts and labor to replace the synchros would be alot more than the cost of a used gearbox. Your transmission code will be stamped into the bottom of the bellhousing Here is a list of trans codes and their gear ratios and R/P's scirocco.org/gears/Since your car is already swapped who knows what trans it currently has. The only way to tell will be to look for the code. As far as a replacement? Well you need to find out if yours has 90mm or 100mm axle flanges and pretty much any MK2/MK3/B3 linkage shifted box will fit. You might need to swap clutch discs to match the input shaft splines though. If yours only has trouble when it is cold try changing your trans oil first.

It's probably not as bad as I'm making out there, but it's gonna need doing within the next 6 months or so - once it's warm it behaves. I know the box currently fitted is the standard 1.8 16v box - it has done 170k miles, so its only to be expected really. Is this an O2Y? I think it's rod change - must be as it's got a weighted shift rod fitted. As far as 2nd hand boxes go, it's not finding one that's the problem. Most are gonna have done about 150k miles now, so it's finding one that's any better that the one I'm trying to replace, and it's hard to take people's word if it's been removed from the car

are you sure it isnt just the linkage thats got progressively worse? just a thought. arent those boxes with rod change 020 or is that just a version for the 8v? I know they all fit the same but cant remember if the 16v box is slightly beefed up in some way or different ratios.

the rod change boxes with the big driveshaft flanges are pretty much all the same just ratios change, diesel box is way to go for a bit of fun

I was having exactly the same problem on my passat, and thats only 5 years old with 90k on it!!
I bought the correct gearbox oil from VW and did an oil change on the box, its now massively improved and changes fine when cold.
Def give an oil change a go first and make sure you use the correct oil (not just what your local motor factors say "this should be ok!")

This, a proper oil change often sorts the 2nd crunch! People rave about Redline MTL oil too so I'd go for that (I did once then the diff blew up a few 100 miles later... ). Your box, if it is the standard box for the car should be an 020 2Y gearbox, but as said above any 020 box will fit provided you get the right friction disc for it, I have an 8v AUG box which is identical to the 2Y with a slightly taller 2nd and 5th gear If you do decide to get the one you have fixed though, get the diff bolted at the same time, it'll save you alot of ballache when the diff throws a rivet!!!
