1983 Mazda 323 1.3 BD Model
Time has come to sell my daily retro, brought from spottedlaurel in 2007 with 61k. The original elderly owners had pxed it against a modern at a Hyundai garage, where spottedlaurel had saved it and I purchased it off him a few months later.
It’s been a great little car transporting me to Uni and back also all over the country! Ultra reliable as you would expect from 80’s j-tin.
Mileage is now 74k as well as regularly servicing I have done the following
Clutch
Thermostat
Clutch cable
Drive belt
Head gasket at 70k – also full cylinder head decoke. Valve stem seals etc
Front wheel bearing.
Rotor arm
Dizzy cap
Ignition module
New hadrians fuel filler neck
rear wheel cylinders and rear shoes
2 front shocks replaced (genuine mazda!)
1 rear shock replaced, have another for the other side
rebuilt master cylinder
replacement bias valve fitted
new hand brake cable
cv boot
ball joint
rear brake flexi hoses
exhaust back box
coolant flushed and replaced with red longlife antifreeze
probably lots of other stuff I’ve forgotten
I’ve serviced in twice in the 11000miles oil+filter change/plugs/fuel+airfilters.
About the car the BD 323 was the first fwd 323, sold around the globe under various different names. In the U.S. the GLC (great little car!) Asia the Familia also versions were also sold as Ford lasers.
Engine: Single carb, E3 1300 8valve around 70bhp. Surprisingly nippy for a 1300.
Also benefits from a timing chain not a belt. Runs very well nice and quite. Averages 40mpg, with spirited driving or economical driving but always 40mpg
Gearbox: 5spd manual, fifth gear is quite long ideal for motorways cruising. I’ve found 2nd gear can be notchy especially when cold. - Have since changed gearbox oil and this so much better
Body work: Very solid the car was obviously treated to some sort of rust protection early in its life. A yellow sticky substance have been sprayed/injected in most areas likely to rust: inside of door skins, bonnet structure etc.
It has some welding during my ownership, some work on the boot floor where the mud guard had done a good job as a moisture trap!. Also it had a small patch on one sill for a mot. Fuel filler had also rotted so was replaced with a Hadrian pattern one.
What lets it body down it’s a number of super market dents mostly down the drivers side most are shallow so could probably be pulled out.
The valance has been painted with under seal, it would look so much better painted the factory colour but I never got round to it.
The front panel above the grill is not 100% after an altercation with a saxo and is slightly dented, with cracks in the paint. The panel is still avaible from Hadrian panels. The best thing would be to buy one and respray it.
Interior: Mint! Resplendent in various shades of brown! Rear seats look hardly sat in. Only sign of any use in on the driver’s seat which is slightly worn on the bolster. Also has optional extras rear seat belts! Original steering wheel replaced with one from a GT.
The original twiddly knob am/lw radio is still in place in the dash and works fine. I have fitted a cd multichanger, with the cassette hu in glove box and the changer mounted under the passenger seat. Modern kenwood speakers are mounted in original speaker mounts.
Electrical:
Intermittent wipers, rear wash wipe all works! Clock!
Has been fitted with an after market headlamp wash, not currently working so I removed it all the bits are included if you want to try making it go.
Wheels/tyres:
All good thread but all are budget brands, wheels are 13” 4.5j probably a bit to skinny for the car, but do come with trim rings! P.c.d. is 4x4.5” or 114.3 so opens up a huge range of j-wheels.
Factory work shop manual
Will come with 9or10 months mot £550ono
currently no tax but I will stick 6 months on for that price

cheers Mat
