I've been having a problem with my Starlet since I swapped the engine in it. Can't seem to get it to charge, have tried three different alternators, a new battery & still can only get 10.6 volts at the alternator. One thing I have noticed is the battery light isn't on when the ignition is on, which I believe may well be related, but don't know how! Anyone got any ideas what I can check/try? As my electrical knowledge isn't exactly great.

Sounds like the wire to the dash light is not connected or the bulb is blown, this will stop the alternator getting exited and putting out a charge.

I'm sure if you touch the small wire for the warning light onto the alternator body the light will come on if the alternator is knackered?

I'm sure if you touch the small wire for the warning light onto the alternator body the light will come on if the alternator is knackered? Matt I think thats right, A positive feed from the battery goes to the dash bulb then from there to the alternator where it finds an earth and exites the alternator into charging, if you earth the wire at the alt end it should light up, if it doesn't then the bulb or circuit is broken, if it does then it is the alt ...

Have you checked for slipping belt?

I'll have a look at the feed to the bulb on the dash, as it isn't lighting up with the ignition on, so could be the root cause of it all. It's not the belt, that's tight enough & I've checked the voltage at the alternator itself, so it seems as though it's not being excited into working. Job for Monday when I'm not at work. Thanks for all your help

What they said - it'll be the bulb or bulb circuit. My mini didnt have one wired up at all - somehow I managed to drive it 120 miles with the electric fan and headlights on before it all styarted going wrong. I've got no provision in the dash for a bulb, so just bridged the wire with a 200 ohm resistor (1/2 watt) to a switched ignition feed.
