I need to bend some ply for my camper roof.4mm ply I know steam will do but I don't have a steamer.I was going to use 2mm ply if there is any.Then skim with fibreglass.I don't have to use ply as I am going to paint it after I just need to get the shape.  |

I don't mind if its done in sections then skim in fibreglass then filler.I have do the front roof section.Any ideas welcome

get some foamboard instead....
cuts witha stanleyknife and we use ot for horsebox ceilings and its fine..
never seen 2mm ply... and to be honest the thin ply fractures if you bend it too much as the centre core is normally quite thick..

I relined the roof of our camper with 3mm birch ply, tucked into channels on either side of the van leaving it in a W shape, then popped up into place   No cracking, the last lot lasted for 30+ years before it split  |

should add that foamboard can be bent to shapes really easily using a standard hot air gun... ill see if I can find some links to it... no I cant  my google will only find american sites for some reason... its basically what we use at work for making vynil signs onto incredibly light crisp white surface, we normally fix it up using those little screws with eh cup washer behind or contersunk self tappers and a circle fo white vynil over the head depending on where it is.. sorry i cant me more help with links.. ill get he details of it off my boss tomrrow |

I have tryed 4mm ply it cracks 3mm doesn't, its what the factory used in the 60/70s to line the roofs of Splits and Bays, the 1mm makes all the difference, the 5ft sheet can almost be bent edge to edge its that flexible |

How about flexi-ply?? I used to make loads of stuff out of it. There are two types. Slit ply and flexi ply. Flexi ply is the best and I used to laminate two sheets together to make the shape free-standing/rigid. Dead easy and bends really nicely. Not 'car' related, but here are some pics of some of the stuff I did with my students years ago (can't find hte pics of the really cool stuff!)   |

flexi ply rules ;D and would bend around a lamp post. It's a wood revelation, like when you first find you can head butt balsa in half.
Good old 3mm birch will prob be cheaper and more hard wearing though.

my dad used to make shields by wrapping and ratcheting thin ply boards (3mm i think) round a barrel, then gluing another sheet over the top. could get any curvature just depends on how tight you pull the ratchet.

yes ,it started badly ,petered off in the middle and the least said about the end the better!!!

I have now got some bendy ply and its great.But now what should i use to cover it with.I was going to stone chip then paint cream.Or should i use black,cream pvc.But how would i do the corners and bends i don't want it to look a mess.Thanks

you could use some ex exhibition cord carpet ,its thin and spray tacs to bendy ply very well,you can make neat joints and hemmed ends with it . is that guy still in ilkeston with a warehouse basement full of it? ,all colours 50p sq mtr? i have used it on numerous boats ,i think he used to advertise in the ad mag

That plastic stuff is called styrofoam....as rottie said, its great for moulding into shapes with a heat gun. (note...............this is nothing like a stylaphone, although sounds similar)
