Hey fellas. In a moment of madness I've gone and purchased a '93 850 T5 manual saloon 'blind' that's right, I've bought the bloody thing with no pictures and not having actually seen it (200 miles away) . I can tell you however that it was at a good price, has only 2 owners from new, 136k and it's current owner is 65 and has spent ££££s on it. What should I look for? Common faults etc And most importantly how do I tune one? Any opinions from t5 owners would be cool I'm at work at the mo so can't contribute with pics till I get home but awesum 850 pics would be appreciated. Thanks kindly good people of RR Ross

A friend of mine had one and that eat front tyres! And most importantly how do I tune one? It's a volvo so the engine is pretty strong as standard from what I've read. Standard bottom end is good for a reliable 350 bhp. So bigger turbo, injectors and remap ;D Cool cars pity they are FWD really

Tuning is via a chip change. The brand 'Rica' crops up Volvo chips are mentioned. The current fast Focuses (Focii?) use Volvo T5 power so there's plenty of bits about.
Regarding RWD gearboxes, I think 9 series Volvos are the donors, but I'm not sure if it's all of them or just one with a specific engine.
My old T-5 Auto Estate is greatly missed.

A friend of mine has one. He loves it, isn't massively a fan of the 24mpg, but that isn't *that* bad considering speed/power and more importantly, sound ;D He had it chipped and it scared him so put it back to standard.. He didn't uprate anything to match the power gains though, so I guess that's understandable. I'd happily drive one, but I'd probably put it on LPG since becoming a convert to it

Yellow Saloon pictured above is a T5-R. 250BHP, 155MPH and 0-60 in 6.5 secs. Quite the Q-Car.

I had a T5. I really liked it. The missus didn't, though - they're surprisingly massive! Acceleration is epic, equipment list is endless, and they're pretty well nailed together. Hopefully the heater works in yours - mine was decidedly temperamental by the end, and it costs a fortune to fix. On the whole, however, brilliant cars. I really enjoyed owning one. ;D

A very well equipped (if incredibly dirty) interior. You'll like sitting in there. And the engine woofles like a V8. I was surprised to find a fold-out child seat built into the rear armrest!

I used to have a '96 T5 saloon - also bought it 'blind' from e-bay with what I thought was a stupidly low bid last minute which won It was a replacement for my 944 and was miles better, superb performance and totally innocuous appearance surprised many hot hatch and sports car drivers Only problem I had was occasional difficulty starting from hot if I tried to re-start it after a particularly enthusiastic bit of driving, oh yeah, and it does eat front tyres when driven hard!

Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

Definitely on my list of must-own FWD's, Dad had a base NA engined 850 for a couple of years and it was very nice to drive, well balanced, amazingly sure footed in the wet, comfortable high-mile cruiser, only let down by the lack of power (uphill our family 3.5L Magna towing a full box trailer could out-drag it ), which would moste definitely not be an issue in the turbo variant!

Seriously champion cars. The previous incarnation of the Doctor was an 850 2.5l 20v - not a T5. Absolutely loved it, did massive miles in it. Not the most powerful car ever, but powerful enough. Scored my biggest speeding ticket in it too Illegal speeds + a copper managing to hide in Mad Max 2 territory = a lot of apologizing and getting let off for 30 kph over. It died due to massive rust holes in the firewall. The old man parked it under a gum tree for a couple of months while I was on a study tour of the UK. The drain holes got clogged and every time it rained I got a free 4 inch pool in the floor. So have a good look around that area. One thing - the rotor in the dizzy cap does crack. And it messes with the timing. Its intermittant, and results in a cough just when you don't need it (taking off usually). Aside from that, nothing that unusual about them. Champion cars. Here's a few pics of the old beast. 17 inch Volvo Volans (I think, can't remember now), full Billie suspension a few inches lower than standard. Never touched down during driving, but it was on the verge when heading for driveways. A few other little bits and pieces - new stereo etc, but nothing too drastic. Daily driver to complement the Morris. And an excellent way to munch 1000+miles in a day.

Get on here dude forums.t5d5.org/index.php? excellent advice on all things T5 shaped, and a really good spares support at v.discount prices. Avoid volvo performance club - a bit too much 'show' on there. As i said on the phone first thing - check the breather system - if it's blocked or if there's smoke on the overrun change it asap as it can damage some very important stuff. The crankseal gaskets seem to be a bit fragile and is one hell of a job to do from what i've heard. Tired bushes can make torque steer a PITA and also check the top turbo damper bush. There's an awesome dude called Tim up your way who guys i know in southampton and bournemouth take their volvos to religiously - look him up on T5D5 or drop me a pm and i'll give you his number. I preferred these much more to my 9000's - even the 2.3FPT's, feel far more snug inside, and steering is a lot more precise IMO. Don't believe the hype about foci engine bits either - they had the newer 2.5 volvo engine, which shares little with the older 2.3 these volvos had. Also your year of T5 i believe should have the swanky and quite rare intercooler piping, which gives far better spool-up than the later revised piping route. Have a look here at the RT Mechanics' Yellow Peril, possibly the best T5 in the world coming together, with the right side of 500bhp forums.t5d5.org/index.php?showtopic=2436Just a quick pic of a real clean, looked after 'R'. Nearly splurged on this one a while back. Also what works on a 7' will work on a T5 I'll get some more up when i'm a bit more awake/alive.
