Sorry, but I'm chatty when I get excited (ask my girlfriend) and this is bound to be long ... long time reader, first time poster ... you chaps are pretty inspiring! I'm originally from Manchester, UK, but I now live in Phoenix, AZ, USA. Several years ago a local bloke was selling a running but painfully mistreated 1972 Celica ST for $1250 (if I remember right) and I HAD to rescue it from him. The body is straight and pretty rust free, the oil splattered all over it ensured it stayed that way. The car had it's original 18R-C motor and a 4 speed. When I got there to do the deed the PO told me just that day the transmission had taken a sh1t and it wasn't drivable. On the bright side, a perfect time to renegotiate the price and I finally got it from him for $500. I rented a flatbed trailer and hauled it off to some spare land a mate of mine owns and there it sat while I decided WTF to do with it now. Two weeks ago I'm browsing ebay for something interesting and came across a 1.8L motor and transmission (with all the wiring, ECU, intake, exhaust manifold, etc.) from a 1994 Eunos Roadster, which is the Japanese model Mazda Miata MX5. I won it for about $550, delivered to my gaff for $770. Has under 80,000 miles. I'm sure there'll be some kind of catch, but Mazda BP motors are cheap as chips here and aftermarket support is really good and it was about the same price as just buying a decent replacement gearbox for the 18R-C. Plans then ... I know that's what y'all are interested in! Initially it'll be normally aspirated, but a turbo, manifold and bits from a Mazdaspeed 3 should bolt right on. The turbo on the 3 is small but it'll get me started. I'll control the turbo setup with a Megasquirt. The ignition will be a Ford EDIS system so that part should be a piece of pee to integrate into Megasquirt. The standard 18R-C 2L motor put out about 95hp when new, the standard Mazda BP 1.8L put out about 130hp, so I think a nicely tuned and turbo'd 1.8L BP motor should easily be good for 200hp! Anyone else think Megasquirt sounds kinda dirty? I plan to try and find front and rear subframes and suspension from a wrecked Miata and graft them into the Celica which will give me some pretty awesome handling, rack and pinion steering, independent rear suspension, massive aftermarket, etc. Adjustable coilovers all around will get me the stance I want. The later model Miata came with bigger brakes and I'll probably graft in some Tilton or Wilwood pedals and master cylinders. When I'm ready I'll get the body blasted/dipped and primered and fix any rust I missed when I was poking it with a screwdriver. Plastic/glass flares are easily available for this model so I'll keep the standard Miata track and put some big effin' meats on it. Here's some cars I'm using for inspiration: carscoop.blogspot.com/2007/08/1971-toyota-celica-with-honda-s2000.htmlbringatrailer.com/2009/01/23/bat-exclusive-amazing-1971-toyota-celica/bringatrailer.com/2009/09/08/s2000-power-1977-toyota-celica-hot-rod/I'll get some pics added when the motor arrives and I get a chance to haul the car down from its resting place. I also need to finish a home project so I can clear a space in my garage for it as I expect it'll be sitting on stands for quite some time. As for colours, it'll be black (of course), probably flat black, with red wheels. A stripped out interior, custom dash, roll cage and racing seats and 5 point harnesses will give it the boy racer look. Drooling yet? -Steve

The guy that built that white car is something of a cult hero, and there are several more Celicas with S2000 drivetrains built now. I'm a cheap rse though, and I don't see me spending $3000 on the motor and transmission and then $1000s more on the parts to do a righteous job on it. Anyway, there's almost nowt on the net about updating RWD Celicas so I figure taking the old hotrodding tactic of welding in crossmembers from something else and building off them will give me a leg up and a good probability of success. The Celica came with reciprocating ball steering and a rear axle that's like limp pasta when more power gets thrown at it. The Gen 1 Supra axle all but bolts right in and it has disks and an LSD, but it's still early 80's tech. I want late model tech with forum support and go faster parts availability. I promise there'll be pics when the parts start arriving and I get the car in my garage. First job will be to get it level and on stands so I can clear it out and clean it up and get a good look at what I have. After that it'll be trying to poke the motor and transmission into it and get a feel for what's what. I'd like to start the motor at some point so I'm not killing myself for nothing. I have a lead on a complete front crossmember and suspension, which is what the motor bolts to in the Miata. I have a rear diff in stock already so I need axles, hubs, uprights, etc. and a rear cross member. -Steve

i like your thinking Many people go to extreme lengths to 5 link solid axles and what not, what they don't seem to think about is that they're archaeology-spec and newer can often be cheaper too! That's what i did aswell - £60 for an axle/shafts/brakes/diff that will take 400hp?! yes please lol! It's going to be awesome i'd love an ST celica, i'm so jelous!

Yeh, the F series axles are tough and can do a lot of power but they're getting rare here.
Anyway, update: I found a guy who has just about everything I need for Miata parts. Front cross member, rear subframe, steering rack and column, uprights, hubs, brakes, axles and struts. I'll find a wrecked Miata body shell and cut out the strut towers and a large section of the inner wings so I have them in case I need to graft them into the Celica too. Having the strut towers will, hopefully, help me get exactly the stance I want without losing too much in terms of suspension travel and I'll be able to use Miata camber plates. This will cost me a few quid (bucks) but I've gotten such good deals so far I'll probably be about $2500 (1500 GBP) out of pocket with a ton of work I can do before I need to spend a bunch more.
The stance I want is low ... the wheels tucked up into the wings with about an inch of tyre showing and as little tyre clearance as I can get without burning off the tyre on the wings. I'll have to see what ground clearance that gives me when I have it mocked up.

I'll calm your jones in good time ... for now, though, just image the Celica in flat black, red wheels, perfect stance, rolling down the road howling, making dogs bark and scaring small children.
I'm going to see the guy with the Miata parts next week, he's cutting me a deal on all the parts I think I need (I know I'll need more later), but I won't get up there until next week as my weekend is already full. He lives close to where my Celica is stored to I'll make a day of it and grab the car too and haul it home on a flatbed.
My neighbors will love me!

HKP, Just got a chance to look at the pics, what a dope car your TA22 is. I bet it flies with the SR20DET in it, I'm suprised your T series axle hasn't already let go ... no burnouts then? The minilites (I guess they are) look the sh1t on it and the clean lines with just the Celica badge on the back ... t'riffic! -Steve

Cheers Steve! Yeah,it goes like stink! It breaks traction in the damp in 4th and 5th and in 2nd in the dry when it comes on boost. But,better breaking traction than the diff! I'm longing to do some burnouts, but it'll have to wait until i get an f series. The wheels are Konig rewinds the same as Koich's,i got them from www.technotoytuning.comSi

Yeh, I bet some wide sticky tyres would do that rear axle in no time ... hehe
I'd be interested in a run down on where you got all your suspension parts, other than the site above. Are you still running the recip. ball/drag link steering and steering box? A rack and pinion has to help the steering feel, eh?

I was thinking that r&p would be the way forward, but the recirc ball on mine must be in pretty good condition as the feel isn't too bad at all! (well, that is until I compare it with my girlfriends 08 mazda) I know the steering arms off an ae86 with power steering are shorter and will increase the response. Starting from the front, the control arms are ae86 from techno toy tuning, the adjustable top mounts are ma61 supra.I had to elongate the mounting holes a little for them to fit. The strut casings are shortened ta22 celica with sw20 mr2 inserts. The coilover kit is a pretty generic kit listed for an mx5 off ebay....that's what I used for the rear too. And the rca's are from techno again. The strut brace was home made, but i'm sure a mitsubishi eclipse one bolts straight on....not too sure of the model though. The adjustable rear arms were from ebay and are for an ae86,as is the adjustable panhard rod.The panhard was too short though so needed different mounting points fabbing. That was from techno too.The rear dampers are 78-80 chevy camaro...they're 2" shorter than the ta22 ones so they help with the lowering. RE the coilovers,i believe off the shelf ae86 fronts will fit with a bit of messing. Check this thread for some great suspension ideas.....that's where i took a lot of inspiration from retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=35309

Looks like I made a new mate with the bloke selling the Miata parts. Seems there's a small witches coven of Miata hackers a few miles from me. Diamond geezer. Anyway, he's going to take over one of my stalled projects and I'll get a big old pile of Miata parts for my hackage. I'll get him to sign up here and he can show you some of his stuff. The 1994 Miata motor and gearbox arrives tomorrow. I'll be sure to take some pics, the first for this project. Later this week or next week the Miata bloke (let's call him Dave, cause that's like his name and sh1t) is going to haul the Celica down to my gaff when he picks up my old project and we can do swapsies. I need to get my cherry picker ('merkin speak for engine crane) returned from its vacation at another mates place so I move the motor around, put it on my stand and chuck some fire at it and see if it'll run. There's a video opportunity ... -Steve

Hello! First time post, and yes, I am the infamous "Miata Dave" referred to previously. Oops, is that a Eunos or MX-5? Haha. No worries, they are all fine little cars! Just a short introduction, I have gone through my British car fanatic phase (Minis, MGBs, even a Hillman Minx!), and enjoyed every minute of the cursing and blood sacrifices, Lucas electronics, oily spots, and constant maintenance, and if I could find another Mini 1275, I would certainly be driving it !!! Anyway, looks like we are going to team up on this "Celicata" project, melding my knowledge of the Mazda with a handsome and fine Toyota body style. Not only that, but the Locost with Toyota power will be completed at some point. Then there is the Audi 4.2 powered Miata racer I am working on with friends, and who knows what other wild ideas we might come up with. So, thanks for allowing a Yank to join in the conversation! Sven warned me that this site is addictive, so I had better sign off for now and get some work done !!! Cheers...

Look at the size of your garage and wide driveway.....and the sun!! I bet you miss Manchester like mad! I was going to take a shot of the whole garage, but you guys would think I'm just a spoiled pimpy bastid. And, yeh, I totally miss the constant rain, cold and general drabness in Manchester ... like a second hole in the rse. I can't get good fish and chips or a decent pint to save my life here, though. I do miss the pub grub, a few pints and the lively BS on a Sunday afternoon after the rugby! It's not all wine and roses here, mate, there are sacrifices! ;D -Steve
